TimeFor
07-23-2003, 01:17 AM
I am going to go tomorrow and plan a route. I'll have details up as soon as I can. PCH is a plan but we are thinking more of a Tour of OC. So we are going to be going all over. And I am going to try and fit a Cannon in somewhere. So I'll keep you posted.

Ok, I drive the route we will most likely take tonight. I had planed to take the 133 but I just found out its a toll road. :( But there is a way around that is much funnier. We are going to be around Ortega Hwy but not on it. I was told there are too many cops and well, just not worth it.
We are going to start in Tustin Market Place. The Ikea went out of business so security and parking won't be a problem. There is however one problem. No lights. But it won't effect us because we should roll before it gets dark. Around 7:30-8pm. The trip takes us down to PCH, Then Laguna Canyon witch from there we make our way to the back side of Santiago Canyon witch leads just right back to Tustin Market place. I wasn't able to get a good time estimate because there was some film/ actor thing tonight down off PCH and traffic was a mess. Looks like some light traffic down PCH but generally a pretty good ride. And Santiago Canyon was totally empty. So I just hope it stays that way. :)
When we get back to Tustin we will park in a lot with lights. By that time most stores will be closed and we should have any problems.

Ok. well here is the best image I could find. It's not 100% of it but it works. Only thing not listed is you take the 405N to Beach Bl, Drive down Beach to PCH. Turn left on to PCH and fallow the map.

wow sounds like a fun trip...abut what time will u be leavng the paking lot ....... if its around 8:00 i can make it but anything sooner than that probably won't be able to due to work. keep me posted and also we should post this up in m3forum.com also.

Time: 6:00pm
Location: Old Ikea Parking Lot in Tustin Market Place
Dinner: 6:30pm - There are various restaurants around Tustin Market place, I'll take a poll to find out where the majority wants to eat. If your not looking for a sit down place there is a Taco Bell and In & Out next to the old IKEA building.
Cruise: Rolling out at 8:00pm Sharp, Make sure to get gas and be back by then. I moved the cruise to after dinner so there will be less traffic. The Route is about 1 Hour and 10 Mins of Driving and we will have 3 Stops along the way to let people catch up. I don't have those address let so I will post them as soon as I get it.
We are planning on doing a small photo shoot for anyone who wants High Quality Pictures of there cars. This will take place right at 6:00pm for best light.
Since there are no lights in the Tustin Parking lot we will not be coming back there. Instead we will end our cruise about 2 miles away at the Chevron Station off Jamboree Rd.
And that's about it. This Meet will be huge, Last meet of the summer so lets make it count.

hehe, the Mobil off of the Beach Blvd. exit is owned by my dad. Haha, sweet place for me to get some free gas. BTW, MOST LIKELY I'm IN!!! That's a week before I start school, so its perfect. And yeah, stay AWAY from the Ortega HWY, its nothing but trouble (cops cops cops). And we have to be careful in Irvine, cops are car molesters there, they'll ticket you for anything. But yeah, I can't wait to get some quality pics of my car...see ya guys there!
BTW...make sure to post an update a week or two before...

Please fill free to post this event on other boards, everyone is welcome. We would like to try and get as many people as possible for this last big event of the summer.

The address of the meeting spot is;
Tustin Market Place
2982 El Camino Real
Tustin, CA 92782
The old Ikea Building is now Yellow and Brown, and there are quite a few places to eat there;Black Angus, Carl's Jr, El Pollo Loco, IN-N-OUT, Macaroni Grill, Taco Bell
I checked last night at 6pm and the parking lot is totally empty. We should have no problem at all holding all these cars. The only other business that uses this parking lot is Black Angus and that is all the way on the opposite side of what we are using.
For those of you who have Radios please bring them. We will be passing out maps of our route at the meet but in case you get lost, it's a good idea to have them. I also have CB in my car, but I don't know how many of you have that. We will be rolling around 8pm. We can't wait too long because the lights in our lot will not be on. It's ok because there is plenty enough light to see and take pics all the way upto 8:45.
---------------------------------------------
If you didn't get this info before;
Time: This Saturday the 23rd at 6:00pm
Location: Old Ikea Parking Lot in Tustin Market Place
Dinner: 6:30pm - There are various restaurants around Tustin Market place, I'll take a poll to find out where the majority wants to eat. If your not looking for a sit down place there is a Taco Bell and In & Out next to the old IKEA building.
Cruise: Rolling out at 8:00pm Sharp, Make sure to get gas and be back by then. I moved the cruise to after dinner so there will be less traffic. I'll have print out of this for anyone who needs it at the meet.
PART 1 – OC Freeways
1. Turn Right on to Jamboree RD and stay in the Right Lane, This will merge on to the 5 North.
2. Again, Stay in the Right Lanes and you will merge into the 55 South in about 2 Miles.
3. Take the 55 South to the 405 North
Because of traffic we will not be exiting on Beach Bl. Instead, Exit Warner Ave, Exit toward Magnolia S. There are 2 exits here on the same off ramp so make sure you exit the right one.
4. Merge onto Warner Ave and continue down for 1 ½ miles. As soon as you pass Beach Bl you will see the Large State Farm Building. We are parking near the top of the parking structure behind the building to wait for people. We won’t be here long and there isn’t another stop for quite a long time so please try to keep up with us on the first part.
PART 2 - PCH
1. Fallow us out of the Parking structure and we will end up on Beach Bl. Continue down Beach until you reach PCH. And turn left.
2. We will be traveling down PCH for a whale. Note, there will be slight amount of traffic at first but it should clear up ones we get down past Fashion Island. Also, be aware, every time I have driven down past this point I have seen cops. So keep the speed down.
3. We will be making a Left on Broadway St. Again, this is a very busy area so traffic may be a problem.
4. Keep going up Broadway until you reach an stop light Intersection. This is El Toro Rd. but it’s not very well labeled. You want to make a right. If you keep going down Broadway it will turn in the 133 Toll Road. Witch you don’t want. After we make the turn will we start looking for a place to stop. There is no address for this location.
PART 3 – Canyon Run
1. We will now be in the start of the Canyons. I am expecting there to be light traffic at night. This road will take up straight back to Jamboree RD and Tustin Market Place. Note also, ones we pass the 73 we will be back in a little Business District, there will be stop lights for about a mile or 2.
2. Ones you see Jamboree RD keep going straight. There is a Chevron Gas station right ahead. We will be ending our trip here because there are no lights on in the Ikea parking lot at Tustin Market Place. And that’s It.
Total Time: 2 Hours
Total Miles: 65

I managed to get lost on the second stage (my co-pilot told me to turn right onto the toll road, after paying $1.50 I got off at la paz, and tried to double back to el toro)... after getting to el toro I drove down, figuring I had missed the second stop, and caught up with the red 1600 that was there... I tried to play catch up but got stuck behind a mini van on the canyon run... when I hit the chevron there was nobody there :(
On the way home a group of Honda S2000 owners passed me (like 30 of the damn things) so that was fun to an extent... I think it would be better next time if we could pass out location addresses for the various stops, as the directions were wrong in some places (specified a left out of the garage, should have been a right, the 4-way stop for el toro road was a 4-way light, etc.)... it was fairly enjoyable though ;)

The red e23 was a 745i with 'M7' badging... there never has been any such thing as an 'M7', although there is a VERY rare (249 produced, total) M745i that was only produced/marketed in South Africa - this car has the S38 out of the M5/M6.
The 745i is a 3.5L engine with a factory turbocharger, they retail for somewhere around $4000-$4500, although the one at the meet was for sale for the 'bargain' price of $7800 (due to it not being fully restored)... this car was also an automatic, although an E23 745i in Miami just sold with the rarest of rare *5spd* manual transmission and 80K orig. (1982 euro spec)... for $4900...
The car at the meet had new paint, a cone air intake, damage to its front air dam, scuffed wheels, and a rough interior... although it is certainly an interesting piece of history it is worth about half of what he is asking for it... For more info on the 745i check out this URL... I was greatly considering purchasing one for use as a beater, until I found out how unreliable the automatic transmission can be.

if you don't care about the engine (such as if the car were a $4K beater) you can do a series of modifications to the turbo wastegate resulting in far greater performance, here is a URL regarding this procedure...
http://www.viinikellari.com/745/intro.htm
I believe people are getting up to 400hp or more with the stock turbo... but I have only seen (2) of them with 5spd manual transmissions, if there was a local 5spd I would probably purchase it, the automatic in those cars is supposed to be really bad (ie rebuild it every 50K miles)... it does sound like the ideal beater doesn't it?
There are some cool options on the 745i, such as a rear seat radio (executive option), rear power seats, etc. - but remember every 745i turbo you see is a grey market car, these were never brought into the US, so when you are getting ready to make your purchase check the car out accordingly (ie make sure conversion work was done properly)... the car also has the self-leveling system, so your best bet is to look around for a car with the spring conversion already done and with a recently rebuilt trans/turbo (so you can abuse the turbo)...
here is one of them on autotrader
http://www.autotrader.com/findacar/vdetail.jtmpl?car_id=140320744&dealer_id=&car_year=1985&make=BMW&distance=any&max_price=&model=745I&advcd_on=n&end_year=1987&min_price=&certified=n&address=92653&search_type=used&advanced=n&start_year=1983&color=&cardist=2301
they also will occasionally crop up on eBay...

hey wassup.. i feel kinda weird posting in an e46 forum.. but whatevers~
first off.. i appoligize for my behavior in the parking lot.. i was feeling really REALLY antsy.. it was my understanding that "TIMEFOR" wanted people to arrive at 6 and then take off like in an hour or something.. but we didnt take off for the cruise until 830 or something.. so you can understand my boredom after the first hour..(no offense TIMEFOR).. infact.. some people actually left the meet. if I knew that we werent leaving until 8 or so.. i wouldnt have come so early..
BUT.. when the four e46's rolled up.. that kinda made it worth the wait.. (that and my in'n'out.. jk) those blue DDE's looked sick.. and one of the girls had mini dde's on her fogs.. anywaz~ as many of us all can agree..a girl driving a fixed up car (esp. a bimmer) is immediately 10x's hotter.. hehhe..
soOoo~ all in all.. the meet was fun when it got down to the canyon run.. unfortunately, many of the cars were lost in between parts of the cruise.. perhaps better communication would have been the key to a more successful turn out/participation..
as for me.. my dumb ass had to make a pit stop.. and i played most of the second part catching up.. id say the best part was racing with the head of the pack up el toro towards the canyons.. i was looking forward to cruisin with those e46's too.. but oh well.. (maybe i should have made a pit stop for dinner too.. heheh.. )
all in all.. good fun.. and a good effort by TIMEFOR.. the meet was a success~
OH.. and did anybody see those s2k's roll at the end of the night.. i was goin back up jamboree towards home and i saw those dudes racing down.. i flipped a ***** to go look for them but they were long gone.. =T

also~! not to start anything.. but some people were talkin sh*t about my actions.. and ive apploigized.. BUT in my defense.. there were countless others peeling out all over the parking lot as well.. i rest my case =)
oh yea~ and i saw a lot of really cool cars at the meet.. all of which have been mentioned already.. so ill save my breath. props though! =)

I didn't see a huge issue with it (there is a reason my rear tires are nearly bald, while the fronts are at 50%), but I think the main problem people have with it has to do with...
1. It can cause un-needed attention, this leads to police hanging out over the 'cruise' route, etc. and it leads to less fun for everyone at the meet...
2. It is dangerous, if you don't know what you're doing you will hit a pole or someone else's car, and this is not something anyone needs
3. If you do it and everyone is impressed, then a brand new driver tries to do it and ends up wrecking his/her car and perhaps someone else's it is also a bad situation.
Basically it comes down to: if you wan't to go for it, but not at a cruise... if you are with several friends in an empty parking lot and you are willing to take the risks involved more power to you... at least that is my take on it.
As far as the S2K's go... I came away from the chevron (after finding nobody there) and went down Jamboree, when I was near the ikea parking lot I was passed by about 30 of the damn things, I rev'd the M and went onto the 5 south and (5) of the S2K's broke off behind me, the rest continued down past the freeway, after a quick 120mph run I was at my exit, we flashed hazards & went our seperate ways...
Next time I would appreciate perhaps additional planning (ie addresses for all 3 meets), and better communication, the directions that were posted were wrong on two places - I know it is a pain to get perfect directions, but when I am behind 8 cars making a left at a unfamiliar garage and my directions say to make that left I do not want to be going the wrong way...
irregardless I think it was a fairly good meet, the most fun I had was at the start before the cruise, and at the first stop during... I left the ikea parking lot at about quarter after and was going 55mph down the freeway waiting for people to catchup, and when nobody did it got kind of boring... although I was passed by (2) police cars going at least 90+mph and there was a police helicopter with its search light on ahead... next time (hopefully not too far off?) I will try to double check the directions and maybe even run the route prior, it was a great place to have a meet (they usually are an hour away in LA, etc.) and the turnout was better than I thought it would be... btw M_specs, you have a very nice E36 - what color is it? It doesn't look quite like estoril?

Has anybody noticed those 3 E46 M3 (Red, Silver and White) and yellow S2000 are missing after the 1st stop?
This group missed a right turn and got lost in the middle of nowhere, but they had extra fun because there are 3 lanes in the road, no other cars so this group of 4 cars revved to like 120 MPH I believe. Great extra fun and a beautiful scene. :P

- but remember every 745i turbo you see is a grey market car, these were never brought into the US, so when you are getting ready to make your purchase check the car out accordingly (ie make sure conversion work was done properly)... the car also has the self-leveling system, so your best bet is to look around for a car with the spring conversion already done and with a recently rebuilt trans/turbo (so you can abuse the turbo)...
here is one of them on autotrader

they also will occasionally crop up on eBay...
what's the purpose of a wastegate? does it act like a BOV/pop off valve reducing pressure and easing the lag? sorry i don't know too much about turbos. sorry for threadjacking. i apologize in adavance.

first off.. i appoligize for my behavior in the parking lot.. i was feeling really REALLY antsy.. it was my understanding that "TIMEFOR" wanted people to arrive at 6 and then take off like in an hour or something.. but we didnt take off for the cruise until 830 or something.. so you can understand my boredom after the first hour..(no offense TIMEFOR).. infact.. some people actually left the meet. if I knew that we werent leaving until 8 or so.. i wouldnt have come so early..
BUT.. when the four e46's rolled up.. that kinda made it worth the wait..
earlier that day i saw a sh1t load of S2K's going north on the freeway and i thought hey their having a meet i wonder if they are going to join this meet, but i guess not only one showed up.
about the parking lot antics, back at tustin after, there was a porsche doing the same thing, you guys were far enough away from everyone so its cool by me.

Ahh!! It appears Valmont has caught me... I too had an urge for some slight reckless driving at the end, but i made sure i went off by myself completely isolated...although i did figure afterwards that i might have stirred unwanted attention for the people still there, and felt bad. Great event guys...I HAD FUN either way. I say good job Timefor. It must be hard to organize an event that large. It was nice seeing so many nice cars there...its a shame some of the members at socaleuro didn't like the event. All I can say is you bimmer guys are a lot more fun to hang out with than most the Porsche groups.

I just love how there are several people complaining in the socaleuro thread's last page about how nobody is aware of older euros when they refer to the (before mentioned) E23 745i as a 'euro spec L7'...
Everyone I was around seemed to have a good idea of the role the E30 M3 has, and a great number of us got into the 1600 at the first stop; It kind of puts the entire socaleuro complaint(s) into perspective...

LOL yah that was me, Socalm3, and another guy, Achen, all from M3forum.com (and me on here occasionally), along with our friend with his S2k.
We didn't have a map, and we somehow got lost from the pack, and missed the 2nd stop, and nobody knew you guys weren't going back to the Ikea lot, so we waited there for a while, then headed to Cheesecake at Fashioni Island.
It was a fun ride with you guys, and we can't wait for the next one. Yes we got lost out there, and we went up to 135 (myself) actually, and repeatedly raped our friend in the S2k over and over and over ;).
Thanks for setting this thing up.

That was a blast! Unfortunatly I got stuck at repeated red lites at the 5 and El toro (Then got thirsty) and headed home. If I had the map w/me I may (I say may) have tried to catch up you thourogh breds. Mostly I am still feelin' this 36 year old out. And I know she can't do 120...But we do dream!
Next time! Thanks for makin' room for me in the lot.

That is very funny, I just love it when someone who does not know much about 745i can trash talked about my car and then trash talked about someone else who does not know about 745i but at least have the courtesy to not trash talk about something they don't know.
Sorry this is going to be long but someone else refer me to this thread because of the trash talk and misinformation.
I suggest that next time when you do your research for posting please gather all your facts. My M7 is badged as an M7 because it was imported from Germany as an M7 and the title and registration reflects that.
Now here's some facts for you so you won't go off self righteously about someone else's car that you don't know anything about.
The 745i comes with 3 different engine configuration - 1980-1983 M102 3.2L turbocharged L-Jet engine, 1983-1987 M106 3.4L turbocharged Motronic engine and 1984-1986 M88 3.4L 24 valve L-Jet engine. Only 192 units of M88 right hand drive 745i were made. The M106 Motronic is the choice of tuners because it is easier to raise the boost.
The main reason the M88 is not widely used is because the engine's setup only have room for the right hand drive configuration. Also because the M88 produced much less torque it is the only 745i that comes with stock manual 5 speed transmission or auto transmission. So, all the other 5 speed 745i out there are converted and not factory stock. Since the Motronic M106 has the auto tranny ECU built-in on the main ECU, it is harder to do the manual transmission conversion. Most of the 5 speed conversion out there are poorly done and have a lot of drivability problems. They also go through M5 clutches rather quickly because a boosted engine can produce 400 to 500 ft lb of torque.
Going back to the so call troubled auto transmission that you claimed, I guess all the E23, E24, E28, E32 and E34 owners out there that uses the same ZF 4HP22 transmission are all rebuilding their transmission every 50K miles. The problem that you heard are based on improper idling procedure during smog test or other high idle tests. You can get more info on it here - http://members.aol.com/turbo745i/trans.html
Now as for the comments about my car, I wonder how you came up with - "they retail for somewhere around $4000-$4500" and "worth about half of what he is asking for it" in the first post and then in the second post you changed your tune a little to - "if you don't care about the engine (such as if the car were a $4K beater)" and then refer to an Autotrader ad of $6900 for a 745i that needs paint job. Also I wonder why you did not include the other 745i ads that were asking $10000 and $8500.
FYI, my car has a new ported and polished head, custom rebuilt transmission for boosting to 500 ft lb of torque, all new plumbing for boosting to 15PSI from the stock 6PSI, custom Sebring exhaust, like new powered seats from E32 740iL and reworked suspension among other things. I would hope that your car will be as nice when it is 10 years old let alone 20 years old.

well I am glad to see that almost everyone had fun. I took tons of pics and I'll post a few later. Our only problem was not having enough maps. Sorry, my fault for underestimating the amount of people going on the cruise. Well for those who where asking about doing it again, I am planning on doing one coming up in mid December. Hopefully we can make it even bigger. Great meet guys. I look forward to seeing what all new mods you guys add to your cars in the months to come.
