It's hard to guess without knowing the exact BMW fault code. Most of the time though it's the pump. A new pump at the dealer comes with a new accumulator already installed on it. Either way whenever the pump or accumulator are replaced you need a diagnostic tool to bleed the hydraulic system.

i saw your post regarding the smg pump, accumulator. I have a similar problem. How do I isolate whether the pump and/or the accumulator is the culprit.

My smg light went on 3 miles from home, drove home. about 2 blocks from my house at the stop sign, refused to hold gear and stuck in 0. after 3 or 4 restarts made it home. let car cool down and now it starts and goes in gear, yet trans light is on and the service engine soon light.
