Hey H. I saw your posts about the engine rattling noise that no one could ever answer. I have the same dreadful rattle when idling and when breaking. When I rev the engine it goes away. I do know I have a power steering fluid leak and need a new pump but not sure if this is related because the rattle comes from the top of the engine passenger's side by the dipstick area. Just wondering if you ever figured out what yours was. Thanks, any help will be appreciated. Les

Hi, '54 plate 316ti compact sport 35,000 miles. Timing chain stretched. BMW computer faults 'misfire cylinder 4' 'misfire all cylinders'. Stated replace timing chain tensioner, guides etc. chain maybe stretched.Moved garage as BMW labour very high. chain stretched needs replacing. Believe tensioner is culprit causing timing chain stretch, heard if cylinders not operating correctly cause uneven tension on timing chain and stretch! Really need help - AA garage cover wont pay on stretched chain (as not broken) Believe tensioner has failed (depresses too much and not holding chain) caused misfire, erratic revs etc.caused chain damage. Read about tensioners, can anyone tell me how much tensioner should move and if moves too much is this failed/broken. If I've missed any vital clues or explanation please say. Any help greatly appreciated. thank you H
