So I went to a shop downtown Chicago to get quote on car (2002 330i)
for a new alternator. Here is pricing they gave me.
Alternator/fan belt - 630.00$
Oil Filter Housing -375.00
Valve cover gasket - 150.00

Question is how do you know when it is critical to change oil filter housing?
Is this price high?

Thanks

there is a gasket between the iol filt housing and block that leaks. It;s a $5 part but a lot of work to replace for $375 (if you are fixing the oil leak) is fair.
You need to remove the alternator to get at it so if you need to replace it there should not be so much additional labor. I can't see how the alternator part could be much more than $200.
Valve cover gasket is $50 in parts so if $150 includes labor that price is fair.

All of this is a easy DIY and there are plenty of resources here. The parts should not be more than $300 including a set of plugs you'll want to replace while you are doing the valve cover gasket.
