Excuse my female car ignorance please. What are the benefits of adding a strut bar?

chronix65 08-07-2002 12:08 PM

"added structural rigidity"....aka "make my engine look pretty"

TBoogie,

Lots of folks say its just eye candy but I say it does help with your handling. Of course not to the degree sway bars will help but I did feel the difference initially.

This has been confirmed by e46 M3 owners with strut bars also. I would think it does help since the new e46M3 will come with one, and the M3 CSL has one too.

Now you can make any mod look pretty and certainly the M3 ACS and hamman ones look sweet.

Can someone post pics of the AA bar? Also what other brands are out there. I didnt realize AA made one.

ViD

ACS Racing FSB...expensive but looks good :D

You will not notice a difference unless you pushed your car VERY HARD around turns before and after the strut bar is added.

Anthony do you have a strut bar on your M3 to form a basis for your opinion?

I noticed it immediately on the way to work going through the twisties after I put it in. Now I dont have aftermarket sways, and I would imagine with those the improvement would be much more dramatic.

Maybe its cause I have a 323Ci, but it does have the Sports Package?

This thread is gonna be long....:D :D

Well, I havent driven an M3 without the brace to really know. The basis of my opinion came from my e30 days. I had a e30 convert with full suspension kit, sways, bushings, shocks, springs, and front stress bar. Flying around a 40mph onramp at 90mph without any front lean was incredible. The front tires and struts would never flex to the point of touching the inside of the wheel well, where as there wasnt a rear strut bar available for the rear, and I could hear the rear tire hitting the inner well on very hard cornering.

Not yet but its on my lists of mods. I'll be getting the Dinan soon.

Front: ACS New style front strut tower bar
Back: Active Autowerke rear strut tower bar

I love them both!

For those who cant tell a difference, do a test. Drive without the strut bar, find a nice safe corner to fly around, and remember your speed. Now slap the strut bar back on and do the same turn. Without killing yourself or hurting anyone else around you, pick up the pace a lil. Notice if your front end is staying more flat than before.

R/D with blue lettering. I think it helps a cabrio more than you fixed roof fools. Still, it's a nice touch when you pop the bonnet.

Mr.Stream 08-07-2002 07:41 PM
