here are two threads by LAFENGAS to help you out...

he powdercoated his trim, but you can do whatever u want with it once you are capable of "removing it" ... if it is still attached to the car it will be significantly harder to do a good job since you won't be able to reach around the edges when you paint it (there are some areas that are hard to get at).

Tell you the truth, every trim that I saw painted, it started to peel after sometime. Maybe they didn't do a good job.

3M makes some blue masking tape you can get anywhere.... I would try masking before removing. The trim is thin and there is a good chance you'll bend or kink it during removal or reinstall. Mask everything off with the painters' tape and paper (the thick brown stuff). You'll need to lightly sand the trim to roughen the surface and make the paint stick better. Be sure to use a good exterior enamel, at least 3 or 4 coats. To keep it from chipping, I suggest using a clear acrylic or enamel over top. Again, the more coats, the better. I've had really good results with this method. I had trim that chipped after first painted... but after a few coats of acrylic, it's resisted abuse for over a year. Good luck.
