How is a Trade Done?

If selling an item, in a forum, and the buy & seller agree on a price.
How does the the seller recieve the money, and the buyer get the item?
If the seller gets the money first, like a money order in the mail, he could
just keep the item, and not ship it out. If the buyer gets the item, he could choose not to pay. If you don't use paypal, how is the trade done so that both parties are protected?

i think its customary to expect payment for an item first, then for the seller to ship the item. So far i have had no problems with any1 from this forum (knock on wood)

Used Fed-ex with Charge On Delivery.
I got the cashier's check Friday. That method worked out well.
Thanks.

i have purchased on this forum and i always used paypal except for one time i sold my tires/rims to someone and i cant remember, but he did not want use paypal so he gave his charge number and i charged it (i own a restaurant).

i dont think i would ever use/take a money order because i heard sometimes they could be countefeit........especially from those who live in the uk or nigeria...........
