Boost on a high mileage car
Ive been contemplating the idea of supercharging my car, but one of the things that is holding me back is the fact that my car has 125,000 miles on it. with that being said, at my last inspection the dealer said that for the amount of miles on my car it is amazing how well it runs and solid everything seems to be and i was also told this by an independent BMW mechanic in my area. So what do you guys think about boosting a high mileage car?

I think you should do it, and shut Danny up.

do it as long as you maintain it everything should be fine

but keep in mind you will have to stay on top of maintainance very religiously as the s/c puts lots of wear on the motor......other than that like i said before, just remember to take car of your car and it will take care of you :craig:

thanks for the input, does anyone else have any input?

I think you should be fine as long as you've maintained the car very well. As it was mentioned adding an s/c to any car, especially one with high milage will definitely add additional wear more quickly. Keep tabs on your oil and inspeact all your hoses as there will be quite a bit more heat being generated under the hood. Also adding an additive to you radiator, ie water wetter from redline should also be good. Sparkplugs, a step colder, ie IK-22's would definitely be a nice upgrade as well to help keep the motor running a little cooler. All in all you should be alright, just keep an eye out, and enjoy, good luck. :craig:

have a compression & leak down test done
this will let you know if the seals in your motor( pistion rings& valve seals) are good if they are worn it wouldnt be worth it cause u will just blow the forced air past the combustion chamber |
I have about the same milage on my 330ci. And its a totally different car now that its been boosted. THe only downside I see in your application is that its a 2.8. Not that its a big deal but spedning 6500$ on a SC plus install and parts will run you 8 g -ish. Now 8 grand and your car might be a great downpayment on the new 335i.

i have 106k on my car now and i supercharged it... no problems yet

i don't like new coupes too.they look more like a Honda .the e46 coupe is a great car and it looks great too.do it.

I am in a similar situation. I have about 100K miles on my car and I am thinking of supercharging. From what I read so far we should be fine. With moderate
boost (6-8psi) engine stress is not that high. For sure I am going to replace all major parts of the cooling system (hoses, thermostat, waterpump) before going the FI route. I am thinking of using the Steward waterpump and adding an oil cooler if the SC kit does not come with one. Now I am just waiting for ESS to release their TS kit for the 328i. |
161k on the clock, will be boosting hopefully by February :D
|
I'd do a compression leak down test just to check the motor before boost to make sure everything is good inside the motor, especially before adding boost to it. It's pretty cool to see some high mileage cars with s/c's now though :hi:
