BMW Aux Input Kit: how do I know if it works on my car?

I'm thinking about getting that BMW auxiliary audio input kit... My car is a 2000 323i, which I know is not compatible with the aux input. However, I bought a newer OEM Business CD HU from a fellow fanatic, and have been using it for over a year now.

The "newer" HU has a MODE button, it is an August 2002 production date, and SW version 50. I know that BMW says 9/2002 is the cutoff for aux kit, but I wonder if CD prod date of 8/2002 would have been used in a 9/2002 car... :hmm:

So would that work with the aux input cable kit? If the HU is compatible, are there any potential issues with the original wiring from 2000? What can I look for?

Thanks.

Here's how:

1. Turn Radio Off.
2. Turn Radio On.
3. Press and hold the "m" button for about 10 seconds.
4. Press < or > to navigate, you will need to go to the 2nd screen to look for the SW Verison which is in a SV xx-xx xx format.
5. To be Sirius/AUX or XM compatible, the radio must be SW 43 or higher.
6. Turn radio off to exit.

The SW50 would mean you are compatible.

Cool, thanks!

whatdo you mean by sw50, does that mean u need sw50 to be compatible for the original BMW kit? and 43 for any aux?

Steve330ci 12-08-2008 09:04 AM

SW = software. AUX-capable radios have software version of 43 or higher. The first poster's software version was SW50, so he's good to go.

:banghead: I just checked my `02 325i. Just missed, as I have SW41.

Gonna have to get a newer radio, as I really want that Aux input.

TY for the information anyway.

sw version

i was thinking since i know bmw upates the software on thier modules vice replacing them cant these radios be flashed using progman????

Mine is a SW 47 on a 2006 330CiC. I really miss my XM Radio (although I hate the company and sub-standard customer service...). I am trying to figure out how to incorporate XM, PLUS the GROM Adapter to play songs from a USB disc (see forum thread http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=644977).

What would I need to have the XM?
And would I be able to use both XM and GROM, or am I stuck choosing between the two (because both use CD Changer wiring, maybe??).

is there anyway to hardwire an aux in if you have an old one, like pre mode button? i would rip out the actual CD and rather use the aux in..

For sure. Get the GROM Aux adaptor for $55. Plug it into the CD changer pre-wiring in the trunk and done, or get the radio interface version that plugs into the back of the headunit (but you have to tap for power).

i just checked my car which is 2003 model 325i, but pro date is 8/22/2002. i also checked that H/U, it has the "mode" button and the code shows SV 26-02 50 ( what does mean " SV", why most people here got that "SW" code), does anyone can tell me whether that aux cable suits my H/U ? please, i also really want that Aux~~~

ZZen330 08-21-2009 03:12 AM

ssx - you should be fine for the OEM aux cable, I think the software has to be at least 43 for the aux to work and you have 50. Mine is 41 so I went with a GROM ax/USB adaptor.

From above: "look for the SW Verison which is in a SV xx-xx xx format"

ZZen330 09-01-2009 02:50 PM

Oddly enough, I saw on ebay a March 2003 production business cd radio but SW was 40. Will that do OEM AUX cable or not? I think the SW numbers are redefined from year to year.

just go to www.gromaudio.com and get their box to add aux to any radio for around $50, for $125 you can have aux input and a usb mp3 player

Acually, I did buy the GROM USB device but am having some issues with it and may be returning it. If I return it I might try the AUX only device orr go with a newer Business CD unit that supports OEM AUX.

Will the OEM BMW Aux kit work on a older E46 HU ?? The one without the MODE button??

The Jiveman 09-09-2009 09:03 AM

No, I think the software version has to be above a certain one, and the HU has to be the one with the mode button. Actually, without the mode button, there is no way of telling it to select the "aux" input.

No, you will need something like the Blitzsafe module:

Blitzsafe - AUX-in Adapter for BMW

What is the difference between using this blitz unit or a dice unit versus the oem? Is it just the steering wheel controls?

I think so too. I have a 04 coupe, and my SW is 40. Definately NOT 50.

I use AUX everyday. I haven't touched the 6cd changer or the radio ever.

Internet radio FTW.
