m54b30 vs m54b25

Hi. Is there anyone on the forum who can tell me whether m54b30 enigne will work properly with controller from m54b25? Are maps and fuel dose the same? Thanx

Controller, as in DME? Not likely. You're also going to have a very hard time swapping in a used DME from another car, even if it's the exact same model.

You can use the 2.5 DME, you just need to get new software put in.

ESS can do the deed.

Assuming you get the right DME, MS43 or MS45. Yes, if you start talking about reprogramming the DME, then you have more flexibility and ESS can surely take care of everything. I bought a second DME from a junk yard and use it when sending them my DME for updates (since I have their supercharger). They were able to make it work for me, no problem. Without doing something like this however, it's tough to just swap DMEs between vehicles.

dang...i was wondering about this too

thanks for the info pei and txzhp :hi:

To change DME's between vehicles, this is what you need:
-DME
-EWS
-Keys
-All tumblers (ignition, door, trunk, glove box...)
-General Control Module V (this will allow the remote to work)

Remember, these all have to come out of the same car.

I actually have a spare DME for my car (in case my primary one takes a dump). I have two EWSs and keys under the dash. In case I need to change out the DME, everything I need is right there. I have an old ignition tumbler zip tied under the dash with a coil snapped around it. This keeps the key from falling out.

This is all necessary assuming no modifications are made to the DME. In my case, I can swap DMEs and then only need to re-align the EWS to make the spare DME work with the rest of my car. Not sure exactly how ESS pulls it off but it sure came in handy for me - of course, I was already having my DME modified with a tune for the SC anyway.

Sorry, but i have a couple newbie questions.

Is a DME a PCM?

What's a EWS and basically what does it do?

Who or what is ESS?

Are there any good threads on motor swaps or BMW tuning options?

I'm new to the BMW world so some of the terminology is tripping me up. Thanks guys.

One n00b to another:

DME = BMW's ECU, DME=Gasoline, DDE=Diesel
EWS = Immobilizer System. It basically checks all vital components: the alarm status (DWA), cluster status, it checks the miles, keys and transponders to control engine, door and trunk access based on the way it's programmed.
ESS= http://www.esstuning.com/
EGS just for info is the automatic gearbox controller. It comes up a lot on this site.

As for engine swap, you'll just have to search through the hundreds of threads on that topic, basically, it takes a lot of programming by someone that speaks BMW. :P

Have anyone tried swapping DME from a M54B25 MS43, with a M54B30 MS43 + align the EWS. But it might work :dunno: The M54B30 vs M54B25/20 differs in the intake manifold & some other minor changes.

You can do the engine swap and still use the same DME if you keep the 2.5 injectors. Otherwise, it will throw a code. I drove my car for a year like that until we changed the EWS, DME, etc just last week.

Did you do a write up on that? it would be very interesting to see what all is involved in the swap. One question though - why switch the DME? Does it have a better tune on it? Why not retune the original DME if so?

OK, that was 3 Q's.

Why didn't you just retune the DME you had?

4ngie 12-15-2008 06:55 PM

Because I got a reallllllllly good deal on a DME for a 3.0, so we just replaced. I suppose I could still retune my 2.5.. where do I get this done?

I'm trying to swap in a M54B30 in place of my M54B25, would I or would I not need to swap the ECU as well?
I'm getting mixed answers between threads and different posts...

dpgrand 10-28-2009 09:17 AM

the 3 liter engine will run using the 2.5 injectors (not optimally, but it will run)

no need to swap the ecu....send your ECU to ess and they will get it to 3.0 specs for you... so that you can run 3.0 injectors and the 3.0 maf

That's cool. How much does ESS charge for this?
Also, is there a drastic decrease in power if I runthe 2.5 injectors and the 2.5 maf?
Anyone did dynos?
And bow do I remove/install my ecu?

Sorry of it's like I'm asking so many questions. I just want to learn everything and be fully prepared before I start this.

dpgrand 10-29-2009 11:51 AM

Just being honest, if you don't know how to remove your ecu, you have a LONG ways to go before you can consider doing this swap.
