stealership is trying to screw me

so after some research on here i heard that there was a recall for the bremi ignition coils that came on alot of 01 and 02 330's and other 3 series so i called bmw yesterday and they said the recall only covers models with under 80k miles which i thought was kinda odd. so i called the parts manager back today to talk to him about it and he said the recall only covers 02 to 04 models. but he said that if i could find anything that shows there was a recall for the 01's he would replace them for me. so if anyone has a letter or something about this recall i would greatly appreciate it cuz my #5 coil is bad so if i could replace it under the recall and save $400 that would be awsome

How is the dealer trying to screw you? If the part is not covered by recall from BMWNA, the dealer would be forced to eat the cost. No business in its right mind would do this.

Get the letter and it sounds like they will do the right thing!

how about just getting some Bavarian Autosport high performance ignition coils and call it a day?

JK1150 01-02-2009 03:22 PM

actually sounds pretty reasonable to me...

well yesterday they told 01's were covered then today they arent and i fell like they are just beating around the bush not wanting to help me out. he was nice about it and said they would do it if i could find something that said 01's on so i was wondering if anyone on here could find something that would help. i have been looking all day and not finding anything useful. i threw the dealer is trying to screw me title to get peoples attention. most threads ive have post dont even get looked at

I thought you meant that you initially called BMW NA about the recall and then when you called the dealer you told you no dice.

Sorry, my bad -- that's weak sauce if they're changing their story.

They are not trying to screw you and you will learn that SA's usually don't know squat.......

The recall is for the bremi coils and for the e46 series 02-05, I believe.

I had this done on my car as well, coils 3 and 5 went back at 40k miles... mine is an 02.

Crashspeeder 01-02-2009 04:04 PM

Does that say any E46 with an M54 engine? So that means it's 330 and 325. Does this mean only cars produced in 02-05 or any car that's MY2002-2005?

Forget I asked. I just read the thread you linked to and it includes vin numbers and other info for affected cars

in the thread I linked, there is a list of different cars it applies to.

So I read the linked thread that kpeng started years ago too.

I found a letter from BMW in the previous owner's records, stating that BMW was extending the warranty on the ignition coils to something like 8 years and 100,000 miles (don't have it in front of me now...).

Is this different from the recall? Would I still be able to get a recall? I haven't had any issues with them to date.

Chris-TK 01-02-2009 04:29 PM

I had the recall done on my car when 3 coils went bad, no questions asked. I have a 2003 325Ci.

ou330ci 01-02-2009 05:14 PM

well damn that sucks. the guy i talked to yesterday got my hopes up about getting some new coils for free. but the manager called back and said since there has been so much confusion that he would sell me the coils at their cost which he said was like $25 a piece and for 6 coils and 6 boots it would be like $177 so thats a really good deal so im just gonna buy them and call it good

Crashspeeder 01-02-2009 05:17 PM

I don't know how much coils cost but that's awesome. They'll screw you on labor though.

ou330ci 01-02-2009 05:22 PM

ya im changing them my self. the only way i would let the dealer work on my car is if it was free lol

Crashspeeder 01-02-2009 05:23 PM

Are you sure they'd give you coils at cost if they weren't installing them? I'd say that's actually nice of them in that case.

PTinVT 01-02-2009 05:40 PM

I believe in the states emission-related parts (like catalytic converters) HAVE to be covered to 80K miles regardless of the factory warranty on the rest of the car, which is where some of your mess of misinformation may have originated from, could ignition coils be considered part of the emission system? (no idea)

good luck...

ya i read somewhere about this and i believe they are covered by that but it still doesnt help me cuz im over 80k. but they are giving me a deal deal on the coils so im happy. if your complain enough to them they will eventually do something about it lol
