Surround sounds question

I have my plasma connected via rca analog cables for audio as of now. My tv has a digital (optical) out but my surround sound i bought has coaxial. Do the optical to coaxial converters work well, or do i have to take this thing back and get another system?

TIA

No the sound system only has two analog and one digital co-ax. I just bought a basic surround system because the speakers on this plasma suck.

Yeah i have a comcast hd box which has optical out. I am going to be switching to directv though on Friday. I'm not sure what their HD box in the back.

I have used several in the past, no issues for me.

Another question. Do i need to have digital cables? Will the ones i have hooked up work for dolby (red/white cables)? I can hear from all the speakers right now and it's alright. Will the digital lines make a big difference?
