Is the Blueray player in the PS3 as good as a stand alone unit?

I was standing in line at Sam's Club last night and was watching Transformers on a 47" Phillips LCD TV playing from a Sony Blueray player they had set up near the checkout. That shit looked 3D. I am POSITIVE my PS3/TV doesn't play movies that clear.

I have my PS3 hooked up to my Samsung 58" Plasma through a monoprice HDMI cable. Was it the LCD TV? Better cables? Or the Blueray player?

Probably the calibration on the Sam's set? They usually have it on Vivid or something to show the colors.

joeski3d 03-20-2009 07:44 AM

Are you using an HDMI cable?

Then you probably just have an inferior TV or you need to adjust the picture settings.

sillieidiot 03-20-2009 07:51 AM

yea it should be. is your TV professionally calibrated at all? mine is and you can definitely tell the difference. i'm using the ps3 as my primary player as well. i do have a really thick HDMI cable (from monster, i got that **** for free when a friend used to work at best buy) the only difference between standalones and the ps3 is the audio capabilities. the standalones have better (audio) processing and more options.

I don't really think it is an inferior TV, it was a top of the line Sammy. I have only had it for 10 months..... I set it up with the Avia disc.

timmay77 03-20-2009 07:54 AM

I highly doubt the TV at Sam's club was professionally calibrated.....

sillieidiot 03-20-2009 07:58 AM

yea it probably isn't, but i'm sure that it's at least calibrated somehow. they aren't just going to leave it like that, they got to make it so the customer will want to buy it.

sillieidiot 03-20-2009 07:59 AM

samsung plasma's aren't that great though, they are known more for their quality LCDs

timmay77 03-20-2009 08:43 AM

I am now trying to locate an ISF certified calibrating service in Columbus but not having any luck. Anyone know of a database so I can easily find one? I would rather not use the losers at Best Buy....

cozilla 03-20-2009 08:51 AM

i bet money that the tv had 120Hz refresh rate

TravsM3 03-20-2009 09:02 AM

I have a PS3 and a stand along Sony Blu Ray and I haven't noticed any difference, mostly it's the TV that makes up the difference, the signal to the TV is the same with either.

timmay77 03-20-2009 09:10 AM

Should I try upgrading my monoprice HDMI cable?

slo323ci 03-20-2009 09:13 AM

Do you have a receiver in between?

There is no way the TV is better.

I doubt seriously the blu ray is better.

Chances are it was your imagination.

I was at Sams the other day and so pissed off because they had the Pioneer plasma settings all screwed up and the LCDs were tweaked.

Go to best buy and buy a monster HDMI and a monster component and test them. You can return if not better.

Here, try this setting in your TV (write down your old settings)

Preset: Dynamic
Contrast: 65
Brightness: 45
Sharpness: 75
Color 45
Color Temp: Cool2
Digital NR : ON
DNIE: OFF

This is one on my presets for TV mode. I have a 63" Sammy but it is ISF calibrated so it may be different results.

If does look better try this:

Con : 75
Bright: 75
Sharp : 75
Color: 35
Color Temp : Norm
Dig NR: Normal
DNIE: OFF

adjust the color up until flesh tones are pink then back down 5 notches.

try these settings on each preset, they differ internally and will not be the same even with the same settings.

WRITE DOWN your currents settings first.

Thank you, I will do this when I get home.....

Glockman, what settings do you have for your 37" panny plasma? I have the same one and I'm curious in the difference in settings.

chris98891 03-20-2009 10:25 AM

everybody ive talked to has said the same about my xbr6. im pretty sure that "3d" feeling is from the 120hz/automotion plus. you won't get that with plasma, but thats because plasmas have better refresh/color than lcds anyway.
