What year E46 330i/xi is best to buy???

hey,
i'm looking at getting another e46 3 series.... not trying to spend more than $15k and at getting either a 330i or a 330xi.

what year do you guys recommend is the best to get in that price range? there are some minor changes in the front and back lights between the years too i see... are there major options to look out for or is it just premium package and sports package?

i sold my e46 m3 to get a e90 325i (6 speed)... now my wife hates the stick so i want to get another 3 series that we both can drive, and i like the body style of the e46 is better than the e90 anyways, and the price fits our budget better.

btw, i want a 330 instead of the 325 for a little more power, and the auto tranny for lazy driving... lol

please advise... thx

The sedan was facelifted in '02. From 02 on, I don't think anything changed except for the availability for the ZHP later on. My '03 330xi was fully loaded (including nav) and had all the packages with 58k miles. It also had the Dinan S1 and I got it for $17.5k right before the recession so you should be able to find a fully loaded facelifted sedan at 50k miles for around $15k right now I would bet. If you need the awd then go for the xi, its still a blast to drive due to the 62/38 split (rwd feel) and can easily let the tail loose with the dsc off. It is however a lil heavier so if awd isnt needed then I'd just get an 'i' (maybe a ZHP, I don't know how much more they run versus a regular 'i'). Hope that helps.

2001-2005. All the new Bangle designs are gay!

RudeBoiM3 04-06-2009 01:56 PM

this is a good start... thx!

yea i'll start looking at '2002+' 330i's... i can live without the 'xi' as it only snows for about a week here in cinci. don't need navi either because i prefer my garmin nuvi... just gotta find one now with the right color and options...

Scott_Shelli 04-06-2009 02:50 PM

I just purchased a 2003 330i, in absolutely perfect condition. It has all the options except the ZHP and navigation, with 57k miles. There were cheaper alternatives, but this one was in great condition, had the 5 speed I wanted, and was steel blue. I got it for $14,000. I think that was a great deal!

RudeBoiM3 04-06-2009 02:55 PM

i need an 'auto' for the wifey... :( but i saw a great '03 with 75k miles for only $10k but it was sold by the time i called.

i'm a little confused with the options that the 2002-2003 330i's come with. anyone care to illustrate the difference between the sports/performance/premium packages and all the different wheels styles it comes with for that year?

If the car was well cared for, $10k is an amazing price. If it was abused, there isn't cheap enough to make it a good deal!

I'm in Cincy too. Doesn't snow that much, but I did get to play in it a few times this year in my XI. Sometimes it's nice to have awd in the rain also.

Agreed. AWD was nice when it snowed for those 3 days or some this year. Crazy cincinnati weather.

03-04 sedans, if equipped with HIDs, had ZKW headlights which are known for their burned out bowls through time. By getting an 05 or 02, you'll save yourself the hassle of fixing those. To get an overall review of what each year came with, the E46 Wiki is a great resource. It will tell you everything that you need to know.

Some 05s also had ZKW. The only way to protect yourself is to check.

Didn't the 6-speed come on non-ZHP cars starting in 2004? nvm, just saw your comment about the slushbox.

Correct

If possible make sure you can get one with both the Sports and Premium packages. That will save you money down the line versus trying to do a projector xenon install, and the seats in the sport package are worth the extra effort alone.

05 plays mp3 cds:) and 6speed

Don't know the differences between them all, but I bought an 02 330XI in fall 09 and have enjoyed it. It was great in the winter.

I just bought a 2002 330xi from a lady who ordered the car from the BMW dealer in Cincy. Fher husband is a vendor with my company and hes been telling me about this car for 2 yrs. now saying they might sell it. It's Electric red & has the premium pkg & I'm not positive if it has the sport or the cold weather pkg. w/o looking at the window sticker. I have all the books, keys, dvd's everything that came with it new. The car is literally as new. It has 21,500 actual miles. She was afraid to drive it for fear of getting a door ding. Maybe saw rain a handful of times and never had a flake of snow touch it. I bought it for the miles however would consider selling it if my 2002 Acura TL Type S doesn't sell first. Email me @ rick.ungar @stoops.com if interested. I just had 20% tint done Saturday, & ordered a rear lip spoiler yesterday.

I just added some pics to my profile of my 02 330xi with 21,400 miles.

This is only applicable to RWD cars. I have a 2004 with AL headlights.

You're only about 2 years too late, lol
