I DIY small things, dealer for everything else.

DIY everything I can, Independent for everything else

***However I do feel there are certain things that only the dealer should do. I would spend the extra money getting a few things done there (alignment for example, idk why but i would) Also if you get into an accident and it isn't your fault, I would bring it to a dealer any day of the week to get fixed before an indy

I DIY everything I can, pretty much anything I have the tools for, so everything that doesn't require the engine to be removed

You're more than welcome to do it yourself.

If I owned my own house with a good garage, I'd DIY everything but unfortunately I don't have a nice shop. Therefore, I DIY as much as I can with what I have and then use my local indie shop.

The e46 is complicated but simple. You don't want to attempt a VANOS repair at home (at least me) but most parts are designed to be replaced fairly easily. BMW realizes the German Wonder Machine is dropped into an imperfect world.

I have an indy (Briarcliff Classic and Imported, Briarcliff Manor NY) who is excellent. He's not cheap but less than the dealer, and you get smart folks, not Parts Replacers, which is key when you have to figure something out. I can do all the trivial stuff, but for big jobs, Briarcliff.

I do use my local dealer (Orange County BMW NY) and find them good as well...but the guys at BCI care more and have a more holistic view. I had BCI do a set of Mahle control arms recently, but the alignment will be at Orange, for the official BMW alignment machine.

I'd be very unhappy if I had to rely upon my closer dealer here in Westchester.

everything. from clutch to painting the whole car.

sbocaj55 04-27-2009 03:03 PM

Pretty much everything so far....but most complicated thing I've done so far is rebuild the vanos, which isn't really extensive.

I DIY the small things, but our local dealership, Zimbrick BMW, is exceptional, based on the experiences of other forum members with other dealerships. I want to keep a good, close at hand dealership in business.

Thanks for all the input so far! Very interesting to see so many 'DIY Everythings'! I'm happy about that!

depends on definition of "small".
i'd say im more DIY up to medium jobs, and indie shops for everything else. i wont touch timing or head work.

Fun to see these results - nice poll Ken!

DIY FTW unless something unusual happen that I cannot resolve which is very rare maybe once every 2-3 years. I amassed quite a few tools e.g. MIS Rear trailing arm bushing and FCAB tools etc to name a few.

retsam 05-08-2009 09:25 PM

Im not a big fan of the Dealer, not enough transparency. MY car goes behind an iron curtain and comes out more broke than when I brought it in! Unless I am under warranty I wont take my car to BMW. I've been lucky to have found a really good indy that lets me watch. Eventually I will do more and more of my own work however.

inlinesicks 05-13-2009 12:50 PM

I DIY everything but if I didnt I would only take it to the dealership, you get what you pay for.
