Tweaks for better sound in my setup

Hi all,

I have a 2001 325i sedan in the UK and, as I understand it, our upgraded sound system is the same as the USA base one. And I don't have the upgraded system. My sound system was rubbish.

So I replaced it.

I have an aftermarket head unit and I got rainbow speakers all around (component in the front and a built-in-tweeter one in the rear (forget what they're called now)

The speakers are supposed to be the same as what BSW ships as their Stage I.

However, they are not driven by an amp, as the base system in europe doesn't come with an amp. They are driven by the HU (a fairly good JVC double din)

But, the whole thing sounds pretty awful. Better than before, but nowhere near as good as I want it to or as the kit is capable of. I don't think I have ever actually heard a base guitar playing on it. The bass response is terrible. I suspect this is for two reasons.

First, the speakers probably want to be driven by an amp, rather than the headunit.
Second, the "enclosures" for the speakers probably restricts them.

I recently installed all the wiring (RCA leads to the trunk from the HU and speaker cable through to the door cable entrance) to install an Amp. I even put a sub cable in.

So what shall I do? Will the amp make that much difference? I have heard somewhere that if I cut a hole in the inside of the door then the speaker gets a larger cavity to sing out of and functions better. So shall I get cutting?

If I do get an amp it will be reasonably cheap (<$200). Would that still be worth getting?

I really don't want to bother with a sub in the car. I just laid the cable because it was easy to do at the time.

Get an amp, should make it sound much better. BTW the rears are Coaxial speakers.

Will an amp in that price bracket really make that much of a difference?

Thanks for the clarification on the coaxial issue!

do you know the model of the rainbow speakers? If you give me the model i can look into them and find an amp to suit your needs.

This is the upgrade path I would do:
1. http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=317339 This will greatly increase sound (especially midbass) at miniml cost.
2. subwoofer + amp
3. amp for speakers.
