The return of the 4 cylinders :)

With C02 emissions regulations getting stricter than ever, BMW of North America has decided to introduce compact four-cylinder engines to its next-generation 3 Series models. In Europe and other parts of the world BMW already gives consumers the choice of four-cylinder petrol and diesel motors.

The Federal government has proposed that automakers improve their fleets' fuel economy by 5% per year for the next 5 to 6 years. Thereafter a national standard of 35.5 mpg takes effect. According to Jim O'Donnell, CEO of BMW of North America, the measures taken will help the company reach these targets before 2015.

The next-generation four-pot twin turbo engines have long been rumoured and will reach the US by 2012, powering the upcoming 3 Series. O'Donnell's team is also investigating the possibility of adding four-cylinder petrol power for the 1 Series, X1 and X3 models.

"We see potentially a significant market that could get to 100,000 four-cylinder engines in the United States," O'Donnell said.

I don't know man, I've seen m10's with turbos that put out some pretty nasty power... it could have some potential. Mind you the e30's are a lot lighter and exceptions don't make the rule, but still... potential.

if its boosted, we'll be ok.
the problem is the cars keep getting heavier and heavier tho :(

Lame

Blacke46bmws 09-18-2009 04:43 PM

It will be ok on Fuel. but I think it will be short on power, but it wont take long before some one gets these things up to like 800hp

screw the gov and there communist bullshit

We can only hope that these engines are as good as everyone says the N52 is. And that BMW keeps the cars from getting any heavier and bigger than they already are.

Is this a joke?

You guys keep sleeping on BMWs modern 4 pots. They're gonna be a tuners dream. Just watch bishes.
And in case u all didn't read the cut and paste, these little engines are needed in everyones lineup to help drop the companies CO2 output avg, for their ENTIRE fleet.

Its these reasons why Porsche and VW are one again, why MB owns smartcar. Without these lil efficient motors, they'd never make the minimum avg. And you would be paying even more for you M3s and stuff. Because those fat fines are spread out to us, the consumers, or, you guys that buy new cars.

BreakMyWallet 09-18-2009 11:33 PM

you guys do realize that audi a4's make 650+hp all the time on a 4cyl right?

4 cylinder twin turbo wont be slow.... is everyone forgetting what a tuned Audi 1.8T can do.

Snik 09-19-2009 02:01 AM

I don't know wtf is wrong with em. Light and small, and boosted. That's a recipe for a M3 killin baby bimmer. And your insurance company won't suspect a think. :D

I love my straight 6s, and don't think I want to drive anything less, but there is no denying what these engines will do for enthusiast, tuners, and BMW AG

djewen 09-19-2009 04:55 AM

Yeah, its only gonna get worse and worse as time goes on imo

Chris-TK 09-19-2009 05:41 AM

Let's start tuning.

dfjaws 09-19-2009 08:21 AM

A twin turbo 4 from the factory. Damn.

aaronu 09-19-2009 03:36 PM

As long as I can tune the motor to get 0-60 in 4 seconds, it can be a 500cc twin running on egg yolks for all I care.

It's still a BMW. They have a long tradition of building engines that don't suck.

lol u sure?

Snik 09-20-2009 01:18 AM

I wouldn't be surprised. Power to weight ratio might be there.
But I think the 330 will walk once they hit about 100mph
