Transmission Mounts DIY

Is there a DIY for changing the transmission mounts? Or does someone know what the steps are? I need to change mine, but cannot find anything.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I hope you have a manual

Put car on jack stands

Get underneath the car

put your jack underneath the transmission and jack up a little to support the tranny

undo the bolts to the transmission crossmember

undo the mounts attached to the crossmember...

It's as simple as that.

I do have a floor jack and stands  Manual, still working on...

Thanks Neil!

I think he meant manual transmission... ;)

The automatic is pretty much the same process but I say I hope he has a manual tranny because the automatic is larger and harder to work around

Sadly I have an automatic.

Are the mounts for automatic and manual e46's the same? Looking to get an aftermarket set, but wondering if it will fit with my automatic..?

The bolts on the aluminum support under the engine/transmission are stretch bolts, so you want to replace those. You'll need some socket extensions to get the bolts on the top of the mounts. As I recall, a flexible joint helped to.

Here's what BMW says on the right mount:

22 11 001 Replacing right engine mount (M54 / M56)
Remove cover from cable duct and microfilter.
Remove lower section of microfilter housing.
Release right engine mount from above from engine support arm.
Raise engine with special tool, described in Removing oil sump .
Remove front splash guard.
Release engine mount from front axle support and remove.

And on the left mount:

22 11 011 Replacing left engine mount (M54 / M56)
Remove cover from cable duct and microfilter.
Remove lower section of microfilter housing.
Remove plug and intake hose from air-mass flow sensor.
Release left engine mount from above from engine support arm.
Raise engine with special tool, described in Removing oil sump .
Remove front splash guard.
Release engine mount from front axle support and remove.

The raising engine part talks about suspending the engine from above like this (Harbor Freight sells a bar that works):

If installing performance aftermarket tranny mounts then make sure u don't over torque your bolts or else it will rattle.

Does any body know if you can do this on an auto XI without dropping the exhaust? I'm temped to lower the tranny and Xfer case a little to get the main bolt that goes through the mount out.
