Pricing to put on exhaust- crazy

I picked up an exhaust off a member and have been trien to get it installed. I have been too 3 different places and here are the numbers . 130$ 175$ 155$+additional if takes longer. I have a y pipe to connect it to muffler (330i) so it's two pipes down into the single inlet. So 3 welds total and it cost 150$??

You might try posting in the regionals as well. Maybe somebody there can steer you towards a shop who did good/cheaper work for them. It does seem a little high, but I have only had my welder work on pieces that were off of the car (not exhaust). Good luck!

good luck....maybe try posting something in craiglist looking for somebody with welding skills...haha

cant you just get some type of coupling..

vinnybones 02-03-2010 06:53 PM

Don't you think it would be better to get it welded rather than held on by clamps?

Rayce185 02-03-2010 07:01 PM

My aftermarket muffler is clamped. As long as the muffler has a larger opening to go over the other pipe, a clamp is enough. If they're both the same size, I would rather get it welded.

But those prices are ridiculous. Apart from the cutting/welding, you should just do the install yourself.

what you don't understand is that the hour it takes them to do your exhaust (if not more...) they could have done 4 oil changes done.... which would equal anywhere between $120-$200 in revenue

not to mention, if they are cutting your exhaust and welding a new piece, they need to spend some time measuring.... you don't want an exhaust that is off by one inch in either direction because it will either look retarded... or retarded

they are in business to make money.... since they aren't making any money off the parts (since you already have them) they have to make up for it some how...

agree with me whether you like it or not, but in that hour they could be making a lot more doing a tune up or something else along those lines...

hopefully this will make you understand a little bit more.... put yourself in their shoes... would you say $50 to a little guido with a bimmer for an hour of your time, or are you gonna say $200 to the 4 clueless ladies that "think" they need an oil change

clearly that is a hypothetical and  i had to bust out the "guido" :P

Im not little! But ya I get what you mean. Would it be possible to have 3 clamps ( to the exhaust and 2 to connect y pipe) or do i just gotta man up and pay

JJR4884 02-03-2010 07:41 PM

i say man up and pay... welding is always >>> clamping

even the best clamps sometimes aren't good enough..... but thats up to you, welding is also gonna cost you if you try to reverse the process...

Found a person who will do it for 50$ and a pizza. :) as soon as this snow clears it's going on !

bigjae1976 02-10-2010 05:22 AM

$150 is not that bad of a price for welding. A hungry, beer drinking buddy who can weld will always be cheaper!

vinnybones 02-10-2010 07:29 AM

My friends who graduated from wycotech I went to Hs with is gonna hook me up. Iv seen his work before so I'm sure he will do good. Now only when this snow storm stops :/
