The BEST Replacement Water Pump for the E46

Whiles shopping around I'm seeing these brands for Metal Impeller Water Pumps at these prices and no clear consensus with in the forums and between the experts over which, after you exclude the Stewart Pump, is the best.

My car is currently at 56,000k miles and my idler pulley and water pump pulley cracked whiles driving down the Major Deegan 87 South Hwy in NY. I'm considering replacing the original 2001 330i water pump with a metal impeller one whiles I am in there replacing the pulleys.

Pick one of these that you have used and are happy with or you would get if the Stewart Pump was NOT available.

GEBA Metal Impeller Pump @ $55

OEM Remanufactured Metal Impeller Pump @ $114

and lastly the Stewart EMP Water Pump @ best price $165 to $179

Saying I don't choose the Stewart what is the next best Pump on this list?

I just went with an replacement oem one , the replacements aren't made of the fragile plastic and it was only $70 so what the heck ^^

If i were to choose one i'd go with the bosch one , they make good quality stuff

go to pelicanparts.com they usually have a selection a rating system of quality. Both Graf and O.E.M. (thats the company name) are BMW OEM rated excellent but not BEST.

I plan on Stewart because I am in Texas but i'd go with a BMW OE part otherwise.

Either BMW or previous owner put a GRAF in mine before I replaced it with a Stewart.

My OEM plastic impeller shattered its bearing at 88k miles, so I ordered the metal impeller one, upon arrival it turned out to be made by GEBA, looked to be good quality and had fancy laser printed "made in Germany" on the front.

I would just get a composite impeller one, the "OEM" brand one on pelican that says it is a plastic impeller is actually composite and is nice but a little expensive at $77, I got a composite impeller one from bimmerparts.com for $47 and it has worked quite well. The stewart one is nice but I can't justify the significantly higher price

Normally, I'd shop around for the best value for the money, but in this case, I consider the higher cost for the Stewart as money well spent. It's just one of those parts tat, if it let's go on you, will cause some immediate, expensive damage. Pulleys are another critical fail, so it pays to get the best you can. Other than that, the GEBA looks like a solid build. Good thread!

so, you ordered a replacement pump from the dealer and received the GEBA or did you order from somewhere else?

I ordered it from a sponsor on this board.

Bosch does not make many of the water pumps that are in their boxes. They are Hytec water pumps.
A made in China company. See the picture of the Bosch pump, its got the red "H" stamp on the hub.

Love my Stewart one... amazing quality.

Rotha 05-24-2010 03:35 AM

oem metal one.

oem is now metal and bosch is now brass

ryanwhite74115 05-24-2010 06:38 AM

If you look at your pics, the GEBA and Bosch have much thicker metal on then impeller (looks casted to me) whereas the GRAF has something that reminds me of sheetmetal that has been welded together...

I would get the cast impeller anyday over the other one....

tntempest 05-24-2010 10:00 AM

The cast impeller does not look like it can move as much water. , has to be too big to be strong vs the stainless spot weld.

Delmarco,

Aren't you sorry you involved everyone now? LOL

You've gotten strong advice to buy practically everyone available...and strong advice not to get any of them...

As I think I said before...on things like this, oe seems to be the best direction to take.

nk_zhp 05-24-2010 10:42 AM

This would my choice

Everyone seems to be picking BOSCH? Why? Do the make the OEM ones that come in the cars at factory?
