Xi Front springs often need replacement?
 
I'm fed up with my H&R, bilstein sport combination on my Xi. The ride was awful before and it's almost just as bad now. I just replaced the fcabs and rtabs and the ride is better but still too harsh. Thinking about returning to the stock setup.

I plan on buying new rear springs (seems like a common failure item), but should I go ahead and buy new front ones too? Or can I save a few bucks and reuse the old ones in the front? New OEM springs ain't cheap (like everything else on this car).

Any other advice for getting back to the factory, soft ride? I cringe every time I go over a bump and it's starting to really get on my nerves considering how much DIY time I put in :facepalm:. thanks

Rears fail and break on the xi's - the fronts are more durable. You should be able to re-use the old ones. I have the luxury of using a carlift so my labor time will probably be at least half of what it's like doing it on stands. Rears - I can do both sides in under an hour easily (and that's taking my time!).

officer140, are you military? I've got some buddies in the army who work on their cars at nearby bases. They've got everything -- lifts, air tools, etc. Really nice perk!

Do you remove the rear springs by just prying down on the trailing arm and wrestling them in/out of there? I did this last time when installing the h&r springs and it seemed a little, uh, ugly to do it that way. Bentley manual suggests removing the rear axle from the diff which would suck.

Consider Eibach Pro-Kit springs. I have this set with Koni Sports and the ride is excellent. Get the alignment at a specialty shop and have the front end checked, also have them check for loose fasteners and worn components.

That's how I did it. Actually, it ended up being a 2 man job to get new springs back in. I had a strong friend grasp the wheel arch with both hands and put his foot on the end of the arm and pull / push to make room while I wiggled the spring into place. I gave up after 2 hours of trying to do it myself.
