Radio Work: Fuses instead of Battery?

I'm working on installing an aux-in cable in my wife's X5 (I'm assuming it's similar enough to our E46s) & am wary of unplugging the radio. The official installation instructions say to disconnect the negative battery cable, but I'd like to avoid that if possible. Will simply unplugging the radio set off the alarm, cause errors, or other bad things? If so, can pulling just the radio fuses have the same effect as disconnecting the battery?

UPDATE:
Well, I pulled the relevant fuses (7, 72, & 73 in the E53) before pulling the radio: no alarm, & no apparent errors or even lost memory settings. :dunno: Looks like all is well so far . . .

Why on earth would you not take the 10mm spanner from the tool kit an remove the negative from the battery. IT's the quickest and easiest way to disconnect the power.

Because the E53's battery is under the spare & self-leveling suspension air tank, a fair bit more work than our comparatively user-friendly E46s. :)
