Detailer's Worst Nightmare - black e36 body shop disaster

So, I have this friend who bought this e36. It had 250,000 miles when he got it, in perfect mechanical condition, most of the car had been repainted, seemed like a good deal. Tens of thousands of dollars in receipts were included with this car.

The problem is, whoever did the body/paint work was a straight RETARD. The hood is so textured that it doesn't even reflect things. In addition, the car is filled with tape lines, overspray, and quite a few things that I can't even come close to getting out.. will take pics of everything for sure. I sanded a small square on the hood for a good 20 minutes, and the texture is still there. But by this test spot (on the worst paint on the car) I determined that I can make the car look presentable. By 'body shop disaster' - I mean it's really bad. Every panel will need new paint at some point.

Now, this car is pretty rusty and beat up and dented. But it's my good friend's car and I couldn't stand seeing the paint in this condition. Normally I would try not to touch this thing for under $500. But who doesn't enjoy a good challenge?

Here's the square I sanded on the hood.. will need to knock it down a little bit more.

You can see how dead the paint is..

After looking over the entire car, the only original paint left is the passenger quarter panel, roof, and just the top of the trunk. It was blended pretty poorly too, it got rear ended and the body shop only painted the BACK of the trunk.

He'll be dropping the car off at my house this weekend. Will continue updating this thread with pics.

Be nicer Alec

My car has 2 noticeable rust spots and one section of surface rust on the trunk

It's not "rusty"

I only speak the truth JAKE :D

Wow. That sure is horrible work. Someone just wanted to get it painted cheap. Really hard to understand how someone can actually provide that poor of quality work to the customer.

Do what you can with it ehehe.

Well, I started digging into it today. Turns out that this thing will actually be a lot of work. Who knew? :P

basically, the whole car has waaaaaaaaaaay too much texture. it's in dire need of a long, arduous day of wet sanding.

you can tell which area i sanded more.

here's what a normal amount of sanding gave me... not enough.

and here's the area with texture completely removed.

This must be a really good friend. That car is in terrible shape and I'd probably tell them no way, esp with that many miles on it.

damn, no offense to the owner, but that thing looks like sh!t. reminds me of the paintjob i got on my old truck from maaco. learned the "get what you pay for" lesson the hard way from that paintjob. luckily the guy that bought it from me either must not care or didnt notice how rough it was.

this is gonna be a tough fix, but hopefully you can get it done.
what grit of sand paper are you using?
what grit would you use on a normal detail that needs wetsanding?
what are some signs that a car may need to be sanded?
reason i ask is cuz ive got some spots on my car that i think might need it but i thought i would get another opinion. ive always done wash, clay, polish, and wax but havent ever done any wetsanding...

I'm the owner.. I never really cared too much what the car looked like, I am mostly doing this because I want alec to have the funds for his e30, and so I can have my car looking a little bit nicer so I can attend car events without ducking my head

- I'm using 2000 grit the whole way. It's all the PC7424 can remove safely.
- Normally I'd use 2000 on any sort of scratch, it would have been nice to use 1500 on the hood texture and other serious spots but it gets dangerous with these bad paint jobs.
- Sanding only needs to happen if:
.. a scratch is too deep for compounding to remove
.. clear coat texture is bad (this texture is similar to a gravel road)
.. something has etched through the clear coat, like bird poo

thanks for the info i think im gonna have to do my hood soon. got plenty of small rock chips in the front and a spot where the previous owner let bird poo sit on it for too long and it messed up the clear coat. so you think 2000 would work for that? since ive never tried it before im just a little nervous cuz i dont have anything to test it out on and i dont wanna make a bad thing even worse..lol

this is pretty fvcked up. I am gonna keep an eye on this cause of all the disciplines of car work paint is the only area I am REALLY lacking. Good to learn.

hi its me alec 09-28-2010 09:35 PM

Here's where we stand on the hood now... scared to sand any further. This was some TOUGH clear coat, took forever to get all the texture and solvent pop out.
