Oil for very high milage BMW 300K+
 
I just wanted to know what type of synthetic oil the best for my car. I have a 2002 BMW 330i 4dr that has 318,000km's on it. I do a lot of driving but I keep my car well maintained. It drives like a champ. Had the car running on 10w30 Synthetic but recently changed to 10w40 synthetic(advised by a mechanic).

I wanted to know what is the best oil for this car in the summer and winter?

I'd just run Mobil 1 0W-40. But if what you're using has worked for you, no need to change it.

If it's so well maintained, why did you chance oil, and why trying to change oil again since you are asking ? Obviously there's something wrong.

I only changed it because I was advised by my new mechanic. (Mind you my old mechanic had a heart attack and died a week month ago)

Should I be using different oil in the winter than in summer or just stick with what I'm using?

Why not just use BMW Castrol 5W30? I use it now at 55K and will continue to use it until the engine seizes or the chassis rusts out. I think people over-think oil too much. Just change it regularly.

300k km is not "very high mileage", I've seen many with 400-500k. Just use BMW oil from the dealership, why is this even an issue?

OP,

I honestly believe that neither of the oils you've used have been the right ones for your car, or your location...it is hard to argue with your history, though, especially if you've maintained it from day one this way.

If not...search for a thread with title 'approved oils' and you'll find two threads, two lists, most of which agree...you need one of these oils...LL-01 approved...and it'll say it on the bottle. Not LL-98 and not LL-04...LL-01

I think there might be one approved 10w oil...and am pretty sure it's neither of yours...just saying. You'll prolly still go to heaven and all...:lmao:

Do not use approved oils as they are the wrong ones to use. Use the recommended oil instead.

In the M52 engines it is more difficult to notice wear and tear inside the engine over the miles due to the low RPMs encountered with normal operation. I have noticed problems in a lot of engines that routinely operate around 9000 rpm at 60 mph (red line 14,500 rpm) IF they use oil with a HT/HS viscosity lower than manufacturer spec, they develop oil pressure issues due to worn out connecting rod bearings, usually along with low compressionn. BMW 5w-30 has an HT/HS of around 3.2, and most 10w-30, 0w-40, and higher viscosity oils from major oil companies meet this spec.

I would recommend Redline 5w-30 for 15,525 mile OCI (or 15K, or whatever up to 18K as per Redline's recommendations).

However, since you have to ask us this question - just stick with the BMW recommended oil. If you want to get the whole picture you're going to have to do some digging and research on your own.

Remember that going up from 30 to 40 weight or 40 to 50 weight is around a 5% horsepower loss per grade jump.

I still haven't figured out of the cause of the light lifter clatter on cold starts that plagues these engines. Only additional experimentation will tell, I suppose.

I'm contemplating going up to Redline 10w-40. I am at 133K with 0w-30 and no compression, oil pressure, or oil consumption issues thus far.

The one that says high mileage on the bottle, havent seen many synthetic high mileage oil tho. How do you guys use something like 0W-40, 10W-40(i use on my motorbike), when it says to use 5W30. Its ok to use 10w30 in the summer if you really wanted. High mil is considered 75k mile and over. I'd stick to castrol.

Dont run 10wX in the winter !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Put some 0w30 Castrol Euro Formula. Canadian tire sells it, it has a red label on the front and says Made In Germany on the back.


You will be fine on using 10WX in the summer.

How well maintained is your car? CCV changed? Do you burn any oil between oil changes.

It used to burn oil between changes but after I replaced the head gasket it stopped.
What's the difference between 10w30 & 0w30?

Big difference. Takes long to explain.

Oil has a given viscosity at cold temp and at high temp.

Number before W is the viscosity of oil at cold temp, (W means winter) so 10W will be like jam in cold canadian winters and 0W will flow A LOT better when cold. The 0W will get up to your lifters A LOT faster at start up then 10W in cold weather and will help to prevent damage.

Number after W is the viscosity of oil at higher temps, like when engine is warm.

You generally want a 0W or a 5W oil in the winter, 10W will be like concrete if the temps fall below -20C.

i finally understand the numbers of the oils, thanks for that simple explanation. ive always used mobile1 high mileage full synthetic 5w30 and never had any issues so i roll with it. and the car has 233k miles on it with no knocks ticks or problems.

mobile 5w 30 does not meet specifications :facepalm:

even their own website tells you to use 0w 40

I think the bottom line is its important to change the oil no matter what you change it with, however, if you run your car very hard, you might want to go with oil that meets BMW's high-performance criteria. Drive your car like a grandma, and gas station brand oil will likely allow your car to run for a very long time.

Thing is the correct oil is the same price if not cheaper. So I'd suggest not paying more to potentially screw your car.
