Lower Intake Boot contortion
 
So I'm part way into a VCG and Oil Separator replacement on an 01 330i. The VCG is complets now, but I'm having some difficulty getting to the clamps on the lower intake boot.

Any suggestions on how to approach this? the bolts are facing down from what I can see. I've been trying every combination of u-joint and flex joints that I have, but there has to be a better way. Can these be reached from below easier than from the top?

And next question...can the heat shield around the brake booster be removed without taking the vaccuum line off of the brake booster? I've been fiddling with this for over an hour now and that's the only solution I've come up with so far, but haven't tried yet as I'll have to get a replacement hose clamp for that.

Try a stubby screw driver.

Yes, that shield can be easily removed. Pull off the rubber molding and turn the plastic lock nut thing and it'll come right out.

I have the shield released, but the vaccuum line to the brake bleeder runs over the top. I can't move the shield forward because it contacts stuff in that direction, and the vaccuum line is too short to move forward or backward to get the shield under it.....Guess I'm going to have to release line from the brake booster...

As for the stubby screwdriver...that' one thing I haven't tried yet and I can't believe I haven't. Thanks will do.

I don't think you should remove the line from the brake cylinder. I'm trying to remember . . you may need to take off the top of the fuse box?

You may want to clean out the throttle body and idle control valve while you are down there

I pulled the vaccuum line from the brake booster. It's a rubber gromet connection that after pumping the brakes a few time to release the vaccuum in the system pulled out easily. I plugged the holes to prevent debris from getting into the booster or the end of the hose. That allowed me to move the hose enough to get the shield out....and now I have access to the intake boot clamps>>>>>YIPPEEEE....next problem is how to disconnect the electrical cable from the throttle body...haven't figured out that connection yet....other are easy.

a wobble and long extention worked for me all the time. Just put it strait down behind the disa valve (hard to explain). the connection from the throttle body use your hand and a screw driver. Like the other connection push down on the tab and use a flat head screw driver between the connector and throttle body (position it to where you can Pry the connector out toward desired direction) . DO NOT PRY (will brake more easily).... Twist the screw driver while pulling on the connector. This technique is very affective when dealing with connectors in tight spaces

Removing the DISA helps alot. Also a small ratchet with no extension and a 6mm might have worked. Glad you got it. As for the throttle body connection it's a breeze. Theres a plastic tab at the bottom of the connection that you push on if I remember correctly. Pretty straight forward. As you push on it, you probably wont have the leverage to pull it out so with a bigger flat head screw driver, wedge it gently between the throttle body and edge of the connector, and just give the screwdriver a slight turn. It should slide off. You tryin to remove the TB to clean it?

Edit: heh, just noticed the guy above my post said that same thing.. see? ;)

Yes, take the DISA off. It's stupid easy at this point and it gives you more room to see and work with.

Just when you remove the DISA make sure the metal pin at the tip doesnt fall into your mainfold. Remove it carefully in a straight manner.

Do what i did, screw the ccv valve...

You don't need to remove the cover, i did it with a stubby screwdriver and took my time to remove that intake boot, then that icv and then the ccv

take you time, swear as you please and then ask yourself...why did i get a bmw ?

DISA is the ccv? Not sure about that one. It's 2 T-40 screws and a plug to get it out of the way.

Thanks Guys. Been away for a while. The tips on the TB wiring were great. With all the dirt/dust around the connector I couldn't figure out where the tab was. I managed to use a pick and cleaned some of the dirt away and voila I could see the tab now. A little push and a twist of a screwdriver and bob's your mothers brother. So back at this and the car's been sitting for almost a month now....But before I went I put it all back together because I knew if I didn't I wouldn't be able to remember where everything came from...never finished the job... and now I'm starting again. One other issue is that I had was that the ICV wouldn't pull out of the rubber gromet. I could seivel it and I could see the gromet turning in the intake manifold, but it appears to be stuck to the ICV. I pulled that bastard almost as hard as I could and she wouldn't come out. Is there a secret to getting that baby out??? I suspect that the rubber has some how stuck to the ICV so I need to find a way to free it. I tried to get a pick in there, but the angle didn't give enough room to push it in all that far to break any stuck parts lose.

Is this gromet just a straight ring? I've seen a picture of something that matched the part number that looked like it made a left hand 90 degree turn inside the intake manifold, but I've also seen other pictures that appear as just a straight rubber gromet.
