Cluster & K-Bus Issues???

I have been having some issues with my electrical system as of lately. A couple weeks ago, my cluster completely crapped out with the backlighting not working, gauges not working, etc. However, recently gauges have come back on, but cluser lights are still out. Seatbelt light is only light that stays on. From searching the forums this appears to be a bad cluster issue. Also, no blinkers high-beam dash lights illuminate, but do work outside of the car.

I also have issues with the sunroof not opening/closing, my passenger side mirror not moving with the automatic controls, and my radio says disabled sometimes when turning it on initially and will display #### when changing from radio to CD etc. Central locking system does not work either. These issues from research appear to be K-Bus related. Is it a possibility that both the cluster and K-Bus are bad, or do you think this is related to just a bad cluster?

Tuesday Bump...

My cluster died, too, in my '99 323i. The car has just over 40k miles.

The cluster lights still work. I just have no speedo/tach/fuel/temp guages. They are all frozen indicating the last readings when the cluster stopped working.

This is actually the second time this happened. The first time (a couple of weeks ago) I pulled all the fuses but put the #43 fuse back in the wrong slot. Took it to my local indy shop and they put the #43 fuse in the correct slot, and voila, the instrument cluster came back to life.

Then it died again a few days ago. The codes the shop pulled didn't seem to be overly indicative to them, other than the "cluster might need to be replaced."

The shop wants to replace the cluster, but I am suspicious it is something else. I'd also prefer not to pay $800 for a new cluster if that is not the actual problem.

I have the battery disconnected (neg terminal) and am going back out in a few minutes to see if that has any affect.

Maybe a k-bus reset? We will see.

and, I am back

Reconnected the neg cable, fired her up, and I have my gauges back. At least my speedo and tach. Not sure about the fuel gauge or temp gauge as they are in the same position as before, but that could be accurate.

So, I am going to run until it happens again, and then get the battery tested first. I suspect, if bimmers are as sensitive to batteries as I have heard, that if the battery is malfunctioning at all it may be the source of the problem.

Thoughts, anyone?

LOL, I found the e46 easter egg thing and did the instrument cluster test. The test indicates it is fully operational.

And the battery test indicate 11.8 volts, so I think the battery could be the source of my problem.

Good work - hope that new battery solves your issues. :)

Anything that saves me $800+ and doesn't require an unnecessary (and ill-advised repair) makes me verrrryyyy happy!!!

I am going to talk to the shop tomorrow. Before I tell them what I found, I am going to ask if they still feel the cluster replacement is the way go to. And whether they want to do any further troubleshooting first.

If they say yes to the repair and no on the troubleshooting, I am going to tell them what I found. And that I am going to be looking for a new repair shop. I won't have any confidence in them next time something comes up.

I just had the same problem this morning. Went out and my dash said my door was open, my seatbelt wasn't on (it was) and my lights went out. The controls for the radio on the steering wheel went out too. I pulled the neg terminal from the battery for about 30 minutes and now my radio says disable, which is going to make the drive home fun as hells.

I'm going to autozone to pick up the Duralast 49-DL at lunch today and will see if that fixes the issue.

BMW instrument clusters seem to be particularly sensitive to battery problems - I had some very strange behaviour from my E36 cluster when the battery was on tha way out - it even added 20k to my odometer at one stage!
