Engine management light

Hello could anyone help me please???
I drive a 2004 BMW 3 series compact, on the odd occasion my engine management light, and handbrake light (in orange not red) come on. It's happened a few times now but when I turn the engine off, leave it for a few mins then restart the engine the lights go off. I've looked on the Internet and can't find any answers to why the lights are coming on.
Has anyone got any answers that you wouldn't mind sharing with me please.

First thing to do is scan the car for any codes.
