Auxiliary fan or Cooling fan??? PLease Help!!!
I have a manual 325ci e46. the problem is that when it hot out a fan (i think the auxiliary fan) keeps running till the battery goes dead. Also when its warm out the A/C stops working, or comes on once in a while. i know it's the fan in between the engine and radiator because i have been unhooking this harness so my battery doesnt keep dyeing. All the research i have done sais that on my car the relays are built into the fan and i have to raplace the whole fan, but when i got to this site i got confused
im not sure if it's the "Cooling Fan Assembly with Shroud Located between radiator and engine" or the "Auxiliary Fan Assembly with Shroud Located in front of radiator"
has anyone else had this problem or know what fan i should replace?
Is your question more of "Do the two fans share a common plug and therefore I don't know which one is the culprit because I can only unplug both and not isolate which one is causing this"?....in that case :bump: for help because I don't know :rofl:
For background, the fan goes on based on the heat of coolant coming out of the radiator (sensor in lower radiator hose), calculated catalytic temperature, vehicle speed, battery voltage, and air conditioning pressure. If the engine is hot, it is possible for the fan to run for a bit after you shut it down.
Now, you need to narrow this down. When you shut the engine off and open the front hood, if the fan between the radiator and engine is spinning, you'll know it. For most manuals, the fan is integrated into an assembly attached to the radiator on the engine side. However, some manual e46's do have the water pump-mounted fan with an electric pusher fan on the other side of the radiator between the bumper and radiator. In either case, you only have one electric fan.
So, is it the electric fan in the engine compartment that continues to run, and if not, then something else is draining the battery.
If you have an electric fan between your engine and radiator, then you don't have the auxillary pusher fan in front of the radiator.
If you have a mechanical fan attached to your water pump, then you do have an auxillary pusher fan in front of the radiator.
I have the single electric fan setup on my 99 e46 323i and had the same problem where the fan keeps running.
Basically that fan is variable speed and not a relay setup like other fans. I'm and electronics geek and have been repairing TV's, VCR, Amplifiers, etc. for 20 years. The MOSFETS in that module are shorted (happened to me 5 years ago) and basically its just letting the full 12v run to your fan. On the plug there is 3 wires. the 2 big ones are the main power (positve and negative) and the third small wire is the signal which tells the module how fast to spin based on A/C pressure, temp, voltage, etc.
You need a new fan. When mine went i bought a used one but the fan was bad so i swapped out the little rectangular module and it worked.
i'm now having the issue where my fan runs for a bit (yes its hot outside now) but it never did it in the past. Mine is not running for long a low speed but more kicks in and out of high speed and if i run the A/C and i'm in traffic, the engine starts to over heat slightly, my rad fan doesn't come on, until i drive the car off at high speed. I'm pointing towards the temp sensor on the lower hose.
when i change it i'll let you know, but in your case your module is shorted.
I'm having this same problem on a 99 328i manual car. The fan keeps running when the car is shut off and it will just keep running until it kills the battery. This happened today -I could hear the fan running when I shut the car off and didn't think much about it.
When I went out to the car in the evening is was totally dead. When I hooked up the jumpers the first thing that happened was the fan turned on again! I started it up and ran it for a while and when I shut it off the fan was still running. So I disconnected the connection right at the top of the radiator and it shut off. I noticed that the third pin of the connector on the fan side seemed like it was broken off???
So I need to replace the fan? THe module that is in there has a temp sensor and relay in it?
I noticed there are fans as low as $111 on ebay.
Oh and this fan is listed as the AC fan. Do you need this for daily driving without the AC on?
What about that coolant temp sensor, could that make the fan constantly run?
