Cheap Alarm Solution! (Installation + Pics & Video)

A few days ago I stumbled upon the $5 lock beep thread here, and thought I would try something similar to substitute my vehicle not coming with a factory alarm. The installation is very easy and requires only 2 main components:

1) An alarm siren - I pulled mine off a vehicle at the junkyard for $10.
2) A method to program your vehicle to flash corners when locking/unlocking.

To prep, I extended the wires of my alarm siren with blue 24 gauge wire and used excess amounts of electrical tape to secure the connection :D

Next, I removed the cabin air filter, its cover, and its housing. There are 3 twist clips for the air filter and 4 T-30 Torx screws holding the housing in place. At this point you will also have to detach the bottom part of the wire casing to free the housing (pictured at the bottom).

After the housing has been taken out, you will encounter another HVAC air box panel, which is held in place by 2 T-30 Torx screws, one at each side. There may also be a twist clip present near the DME which needs to be removed.

Once you have removed the air box panel, start looking for the factory alarm harness. It will be located behind the drug bin, and most likely taped to a wire that leads behind the firewall. Hard to miss, once you find it, this is what it looks like:

The siren installation is next. I routed the blue positive/negative wires through a hole with a rubber plug located near the top of the drug bin. Simply remove the plug if you have one, if not, you can drill a hole (not recommended), or simply route the wire over the top and behind the rubber weather stripping.

Your positive wire should be connected to the top left hole, and negative in the bottom left hole as shown in the picture below (borrowed from tranceasia8)

After the connection is secure (I used an excessive amount of electrical tape, once again) tie back any loose wire to the original strand.

To keep the siren in place I positioned it on top of notch with a threaded hole, and found a bolt that fit the thread. My car has 3 of these notches in the drug bin.

The finished product :woot:

Now a video demonstration of my new cheap alarm. Hope this helps some of those who didn't want to spend hundreds of dollars on the OEM alarm!

Excellent and thanks for sharing! I am going to give this a try once I can find a siren.

How did you activate the lights to flash?

Cool write up.

Great!

raptordavedave 09-15-2011 11:26 PM

after you have done this does the car need to be programmed?

ac_2007 09-16-2011 12:18 AM

Yes, the car needs to be reprogrammed. There are very cost effective solutions that I can go in more detail only via PM.

I've added flashing high-beams and 4-ways with the alarm, which were not part of the video. There are many customizable options.

the factory alarm system is fairly cheap installed and working...why not just go for that? it does a great job as well.

ac_2007 09-16-2011 12:48 AM

Because this works just fine and costs a hell of a lot less :D

Nice and loud

Was the siren from a salvaged e46? Do you know how loud the siren is in terms of decibels?

Good job OP.

I have an extra siren lying around as well and have wanted to do this, but didnt want it to look non-stock. I was going to power the siren with a relay to make it even louder, but it seems like the stock wire output is good enough....

eneka is right, the siren I used was pulled from a random car with an alarm system. I just based my decision on the fact that it was in good condition and single tone.

UPDATE: For those wondering what the setup options are (in the legitimate version of) PA Soft 1.4, I have taken a screenshot of my revised options which include the flashing high-beams and 4-ways not seen in above video:

Want people to really notice someone breaking into your car? Set the siren to a cheap late-night cable porno scene.

You'll get everyone's attention, and the thief will probably run the **** away the second that starts coming out of your car.

Funny story, yesterday when I was playing around with the alarm getting to know the functions, I set it off to see how long it would stay on.
About 10 seconds in, my headlight washers started spraying continuously and the wipers went off. Emptied about half my washer reservoir.

I've been trying to recreate this and get it on video.
