New G23

Hi peeps,
Finally got my first gun, its a Glock 23 .40 caliber, bought last Sunday and went straight to the shooting range and fired 100 rounds, nice gun i guess.
What are the possible gadget i could add to the gun and since i have small kids, do you have any recommendation for a good safe box for home? thanks for any help.

SLVR JDM 09-20-2011 02:59 PM

Good choice. I have a G23 and love it. Lights have been known to cause feeding issues on Glock .40's and I've had that happen at the range when I slapped one on mine for fun. I think there is a fix which just involves a new spring, but I wouldn't personally mess with it.

As for locking it up, I have a GunVault (non-biometric).
Keeps my kids from getting into trouble and gives me fast access (1 second and I'm in).

I have several GunVault boxes. I have the micro size mounted in my car for when I leave my gun in the car.

It comes with a lock. run it through the slide and it can't fire.

It also comes with a case, lock the case shut.

Mine has been flawless, but I have heard of some reviews with problems - either eating batteries or the cable which actuates the unlock either breaking or getting stretched out.

what kind of light can i attached to my G23?

GlockMan 09-23-2011 10:15 PM

^ you have a standard rail, so just about anything.

Streamlight, Surefire, Glock, etc.

I really like my Glock OEM GTL21 light/laser.

There are better lights, but it fits well, its lightweight, and the laser works well.

If you don't want a laser, I would go LED...

TLR-3 and TLR-1's are both great.

Make sure you get plenty of rounds through it WITH THE LIGHT ATTACHED before you rely on it in a self defense situation.

G22's and G23's don't like the lights and cause feeding issues. It requires a different recoil spring to make it reliable, but use that at your own risk.

I've run a few mags through my G23 with a TLR3 and I had a FTF on every other round. Needless to say, I don't run a light on mine.

SLVR, can u explain why the lights cause feeding issues?

Check on GlockTalk for specifics. I recall that the weight of the light (no matter which one) causes some sort of balance issue which doesn't allow the slide to cycle all the way. It is due to the recoil spring being either too strong or weak - can't remember which.

It is only an issue with the .40S&W models.

^^^thanks for your immediate response

I'm a Glock certified armorer. Here's the official explanation from the Glock LE Division-
Basically, lights put weight and clamping force onto the frame of the gun. The .40S&W is a high pressure cartridge that causes a unique recoil. The frame of the gun actually flexes under recoil, which allows the gun to cycle freely and reliably. When you put a light on the rail, it alters the harmonics of the frame flexing, which in turn can cause issues with the cycling. The most common issue is a failure to feed, or a stovepipe malfunction. This is not an issue with any models other than the G22, G23, G24 & G35. The G24 and G35 have not had many documented incidents due to the greater slide weight having more forward momentum, nullifying the flex "interruption".
The Gen4 models are supposed to solve this issue, but I haven't seen any test data back yet.

This is also a reason why more departments have been going to S&W M&P40 pistols from Glocks.

GlockMan 09-27-2011 11:59 AM

Just another reason why I have 9mm and .45acp and no .40.

Its seems like it has always been an adaption.

10mm becomes .40

17L becomes a 24
34 becomes a 35
17 becomes a 22
19 becomes a 23
26 becomes a 27

I know I am reading into this way too much, but I will stick with the originals.
