Rolling fenders
 
Hi,

For those who've done it, and I'm sure there are a few, care to share your experience? Just wanting to know what to expect. I heard there is some adhesive under the lip of the fender? I think this is only in the rear and to roll it properly you should remove this stuff first. Anyone know the best way to remove it.

Seemed to use a bent nose plier to get it out (after applying heat).

Is this the way to go about it?

I used a few razor blades and cut along the edges. The rubber is formed into a V shape so you gave to do it at a slight angle over and over. I uses a few blades because after a couple cuts you're going to dull the edge. Do it over and over, it should be out within 2-3 min.

Cool I might try that. Did you have to heat the fender before trying to remove that gunk? Or can I remove it without any heat?

Yeah just use a Stanley knife... Be sure to spend a decent amount of time getting rid of as much of that silicone as possible. You will be able to get a cleaner/ sharper roll

Hey Stevie did you cut yours out yourself or get the shop to do it for you when they rolled your guards?

Hmm, so I had a quick check of my rear fenders. It seems that grey gunk stuff is breaking apart. I can use my fingers to dig it under there and it seems to break away. Does that sound right? It feels like dirt lol. Not very hard.

Ok, so had a closer look at the stuff under my fenders. Took some out with my hands and it's dirt, mixed with some small pebbles (probably from the previous owner as he did some country driving). I removed a portion of it from the fender and I'm pretty sure it's now down to the metal. Is it possible that this rubber stuff that's supposed to be in my rear fenders has deteriorated over the years? I can't feel anything. Won't know for sure until I get under the car.

Its strange that you don't have any silicone filling your guards up, but I guess it's easier to roll your gaurds now! Ps You should be able to feel the silicone without needing to get under the car...

Thanks Stevie. Yeah it is strange, oh well. I'll get under the car this weekend so I can have a look. But just from feeling, I'm 99% sure it's down to the metal now.

Ok, so today a mate and I got under the car. It seems this silicone/rubber filler is there. Bah! But it's only in the first quarter section of the fender, not the whole fender - phew! The rest of the fender seems to be filled up with dirt and pebbles that have collected along the way. They're easily removed. The silicone/rubber is quite difficult. First tried using a razor blade - that didn't work well. It would take ages to do it that way. Then we used a dremel drill with a carbon steel wire wheel. That worked ok, but was still a pretty tedious process as the wheel is pretty small/thin. In the end my mate had to get going so we didn't get the job done. We did also buy a bigger steel wire wheel for a drill, so we'll try that next weekend. I think that will work a lot better as it's bigger.

I've just called Sydney Guard Rolling and their going to roll my guards and remove the rubber for me at $65 a guard on Tuesday. :D

Damn that's cheap. I called wheelworx, supposedly the only good place to get them rolled in Adelaide. Talked to Joe. Quote me $85 per guard, and if I want them to remove the rubber it's an additional $100 per guard. So $185 compared to $65 :( WTF is it so expensive??? I thought Sydney was supposed to be more expensive than Adelaide.

Nice work Shannon! Same price I paid. Ating, $185 per guard!!? Who are they kidding? An EXTRA $100 just to remove the silicone? It literally took 15 minutes max per guard to remove it.. And he just used a Stanley knife. If they dont come down on price i'd be removing it myself. Oh and if it helps, I'm pretty sure he heated the silicone up with a heat gun before cutting it out.

soooo I know there's a few people here with lowered cars. Some have had their fenders rolled and/or pulled, but has anyone here cut & sealed their fenders? I just bought 12mm spacers for the rear. While I still have about 1 finger gap in the rear, I reckon it'll rub with the 12mm spacer so looking at getting my fenders cut & sealed. Don't want to pull them and they've already been rolled. Surely someone here has done it? :)
