HELPPP Please bmw key does not work!!!
I had recently lost my BMW key and went to go order a new one from Peake BMW in Kenner, Louisiana. The key did not work so they ordered a second one. The second one did not work so they ordered a third one. Now they are saying that it is the control panel that has to be switched out. BUT if i found my lost keys then it would work with my current control panel. So peake bmw is making me pay $1053 for a new control panel that comes with new keys AND to top it off they won't reimburse me for the new keys that I just paid for!! How does it make it any sense to not refund me for a set of keys that doesn't work and making me pay for a whole new control panel. Isn't it their job to make my key work? Also, they won't explain to me why my new key won't work with my current control panel, they just said "we don't know" Can anyone explain this to me? Does anyone work at BMW? I called corporate bmw and they were definitely on my side. However I am still waiting for results. My car had to be towed to peake bmw and is currently sitting there waiting for a new control panel to come in. I don't understand why I have to pay for a new control panel and key! On top of that not refund me for a key that I do not have, b/c bmw has it, and also doesn't work, talk about ridiculous! Can bmw do this?

So what model and year is your car?

How long have you owned it?

You say the key does not work, but you are not specific about what does not work.

Does the key turn in the ignition and does the key unlock the door and trunk?

Does the key just not start the car?

When you buy a key from BMW it is cut and programmed with data in their build database for how the car was originally set up when built. Rarely does the BMW parts group mess up a key, but it could happen.

If someone has changed something in your car, it is not BMW's fault and you would be responsible for the keys you purchased.

What I am a bit unclear about is why a 3rd key was even ordered. After key #2 did not work, alarm bells should have been going off that something major was wrong.

With my $32 software program I can see if the EWS can recognized the key and if any keys are disabled in the EWS. Any decent dealer or Indy should be able to verify this as well.

I have never gone for service anywhere but bmw centers. none of the new keys would start the car at all. i don't have the new keys, peake bmw has it, but peake bmw said it won't start the car.

2008 528i i bought it new. i have lost my keys before and when i ordered a new one, it worked just fine. what difference would it be this time? since bmw has done all my service, why would i be responsible for a paying for a new key from them and they can't get it to work..

Not sure why this discussion is on E46Fanatics? E46 was a 3 series that was last produced in 2006.

Anyway, not sure of your situation. If the car is a 2008, is your 48 month/50k mile warranty still in effect?

Maybe someone screwed up the VIN when ordering the key?

Assume your car is a push button start?

Good luck as we are only experts on the E46.

You might try some of the other BMW forums that cover your make and model?

Check out the E60 5 series forums at www.Bimmerfest.com. See if any other E60 owners have experienced anything like this before. To answer your question, can BMW do that to you. Are you going to let them?
