Car Kracker

Hey guys check this thing out on instructables http://www.instructables.com/id/Hack-Your-Car/. It adds some pretty cool features to our cars and the article says that you can build it from a kit or a schematic. It looks pretty interesting.

nmcclana 07-30-2012 10:29 PM

Hey Bropane!

This is my project, I also put it up on my site, if you don't like instructables.

I bought a '00 323i cheap a few months back and have been working on it ever since - changing the water pump, CSB, RTAB's, and so on.

Originally, I wanted to add an Aux-in to my '00 323i, but my headunit is a blaupunkt, so I couldn't just make a cable. Thought about buying a grom, but as I started digging into the kbus, I realized how useful it is.

Since then, I've used my Car Kracker to diagnose a sticking ICV, check the injectors, remove the annoying 'key in lock' gong, and a bunch of other things. I've found it really useful.

If you have a chance to put one together, let me what you think! I plan on adding a few features, and I'm always looking for suggestions.

This is pretty cool. Do you know if it works with MK4 nav?

I can't wait to unlock my car using bluetooth

nmcclana 07-30-2012 11:49 PM

Yeah, it should work with Mk2, 3, and 4 Nav units, all are on the iBus.

JS330 07-31-2012 12:06 AM

Wow thats incredible, do you have any demo's on the navigation unit?

I'm very interested in this

EDIT:

I only have a tv tuner, no nav unit if that makes any difference

nmcclana 07-31-2012 12:45 AM

I don't have a nav in my car, but here's a little demo that'll write 'cookie' on the screen, and the source to customize it.

You can also write to the Nav screen by booting the Kracker in Diagnostic mode and running NavCoder on your PC.

Edit - I don't know if you can write text to the TV module. I do know that if you boot the Kracker in Diagnostic mode and run NavCoder, you can customize a few things;

And some of the things you can customize for the NAV;

Okay so let me get this right, it shows you how to build an ibus interface and standard diagnostics interface to run inpa and navcoder?! Looks like the only thing it really does that a $38 cable wont is the CD player emulation or WAV file playback... the tutorial is good though...

*Edit* kept reading, the microcontroller can also be used to send/resend messages to the bus... cool I suppose... I would be more impressed if he focused on running such code directly on an inexpensive module that can be converted to do so like maybe like the RLS

nmcclana 07-31-2012 11:47 AM

@jay - It's funny you mention RLS, I actually added my own rain sensor using a IR LED and receiver - here's a little demo;

Then, using my rain sensor, I can also control my car with a remote control - I did a demo of that, too - https://vimeo.com/44699750

Very interesting. Sub'd

How can I use the device together with my phone? (cliffs needed :))

Yeah man I get it and pretty cool indeed - still - I don't like putting a breadboard full of shitty electronics in my multi-thousand dollar automobile... would much rather re-purpose something already in the car or that was sold with the car if you get what I mean.

There are some cheap 3g boards with microcontrollers which you can extend io to a simple ODB interface like this project - maybe look for some open source SMS capable recording device and extend it

might be best to look into osmocom http://bb.osmocom.org/trac/ and nmcclana's work there... maybe add the odb interface to the hardware the osmocom guys devs are using

You just need to add a bluetooth dongle to the Kracker - they cost around $10 and there's already a space for it on the board. I'll put together a full writeup on it, but it's not complicated.

Oh thats cheating haha - here I was thinking with SMS or something...
But really, would probably not be hard to take a motorola c123 throw osmocom on it, then add the software logic on the host to allow you to send commands to your car over SMS. You can even use a off the shelf OBD interface.

http://bb.osmocom.org/trac/wiki/MotorolaC123

And that would be awesome for practical jokes and what not...

I like where this thread is going.

jaymemaurice 07-31-2012 03:07 PM

Actually looks like you can get android devices with serial ports:
http://code.google.com/p/android-ser...rdware_devices
Hook up standard ODB interface to that and have it listen to and send messages.
SMS messages can be read and sent on the rooted device from the command line without even an app:

This is a damn cool project man and I definitely plan on building one. Once I saw that you can pull diagnostics from a device that cost 40 bucks I was sold. When I saw that it was possible to add AD2P to the car I was foaming from the mouth. I'm curious, how did you learn to do this?

nmcclana 07-31-2012 06:58 PM

I've updated the Car Kracker core with new features - V1.21 adds;
  • Odometer Query
  • Temperature Query: External and Coolant
  • Engine Query: RPM, Speed
  • Nav Text Display (Experimental)
No need to update if you're just doing diagnostics or audio, but it can be useful for data logging and notifications. The demo reads vehicle speed and displays it on the radio when you hit the R/T button. You can grab it here

@bropane - Thanks!

bropane 07-31-2012 10:03 PM

I just ordered a kit from your site. I can't wait to play with it.

B_Cyrus 07-31-2012 10:06 PM

Do you sell bropane and bropane accessories?

Yes as well as Brotein shakes. Don't ask what I put in them. You won't like the answer ;). I'm curious about your signature though. I've asked myself the same question as to why no company specializes in selling motor oil/transmission oil online.
