My first 2003 M3 SMG
What's goin on everyone? I recently sold my 2005 325i and just bought my first M3 with 61k miles. Im on deployment and bought it from another vet for something new to come back to and kind of reward myself since I'll be getting out soon. I had it inspected and the mechanic said the front bushings were bad, it needed the door lock actuator and it needed a new battery. Now... I don't normally say very much on the forums, as I just try to read and learn from other people, but I had a funny feeling that there was no WAY that was all the maintenance issues. So I had my uncle take a look at it since he's all kinds of certs and he's a master mechanic. Here's what's been done so far: poly urethane front control arm bushings, drivers door lock actuator, spark plug hole gasket, valve cover gasket, spark plugs, and battery. Also discovered that an oil change was recently done... With the wrong oil. I figured if they went cheap on oil, they probably went cheap on other fluids as well. So, he flushed everything out for me and put in all the good ish. Now I also understand preventative maintenance as it's an old vehicle. Vanos should be inspected, as well as the sub frame by BMW. How do I know if my car has/needs the rod bearing recall?
Anyways, all of that is being looked into. What about when I replace the cooling system. Should I go oem? Or is the ecs tuning system better? What else should I look into? I want it damn near perfect when I get back.

Also, I did have to change a couple of things at first because PO seemed more concerned with mods than anything else. The front bumper was shaved off, AFTER the car was paid for (some people pay no attention when picking up a vehicle...) because he had 20" m6 wheels on it, even though he had put oem's back on once I asked. And the oems were painted black  so I bought an oem bumper to replace it (has not uet been installed) and new wheels/tires. Here's the difference:

And yes the REAR and only the rear has effing lowering springs.... :dunno:
But the mechanic who checked the car first.... Should no longer be a mechanic

Surprise! LoL I hate buying a car unseen, and that is why. I am the only mechanic I trust, and I wouldn't even trust me if I were someone else. The OEM water pump will last about 100,000 miles, you can go with one of those. I hope by "The good ish" you mean the BMW certified fluids. Castrol TWS is the only oil that's up to the task for that 3.2L. You may want to have the Sub Frame checked out... As far as the SMG, you'll need to do a soft reset when you first drive the car since the previous owner (from hereout referred to as dipshit) was running larger rims on it. Also you will want to get in touch with someone who has the GT1 software so you can get a complete scan of all the vehicles modules. You can even have the software upgrades done.

Congrats on your first ///M. Hopefully dipshit didn't mess it up too bad on you. Have a safe trip home and enjoy your car. Hit me up if you ever run into any SMG issues.

I just realized good ish could mean multiple things, my apologies lol I used ish in reference to sh!t. So the good sh!t, meaning BMW certified. I've been reading up a lot as I have nothing else to do here anyway. Ordered the Bentley manual to learn as much as I can. How do I do a soft reset for the SMG? if the sub frame checks out, should I get a sub frame reinforcement kit from say hpf? Or can BMW reinforce it? Thanks for the help!

SMG Reset: drive to about 40mph, put the car in neutral, hold both paddles for at least 10 seconds.
No the car won't do anything to prove it has been done.

Welcome! The M is an awesome piece of machinery!

Got it, thanks

with 61K miles its recommended inspection II be done to cover all bases, its a hefty price but maintenance is a key for these cars, just get the usual inspected too such as RTABs, FCABs, i bought mine with bad RTABs at 53K miles, and yours has a little over 60K. on a better note i hope you enjoy your M, i also have an SMG, and i love it (the commute to work and back sucks in manual) haha. lightning fast shifts and perfect rev matches <3

Edit: don't know what happened there, that was weird. Anyways yeah, I plan on inspection II immediately and I replaced FCAB and RTAB with poly urethane. I liked those a lot better on my last car and my fronts were bad, just as you said. Thanks! Can't wait to get back :excited:

Just an update: got inspection 2 complete and also reset the SMG.. Holy sh!t was THAT a difference maker.. List of things done so far were the BBS CH wheels. The black OEM reps weren't cutting it for me. Bilstein PSS10 coilovers with ground control camber plates. Replaced valve cover gasket, fuel filter, water pump, thermostat, door actuator, vanos seals/gaskets, cabin filter, FCAB, RTAB, and front brakes. And for fun got LED tails and black front grills. Will have pics within the next couple weeks, I'll actually buy a camera.
