SMG Problem?
So i am driving in stop and go traffic and the temp get to 200 or so and the car goes from 4 gear to 0 for about 45 second and then back to gear. The SMG light came on and not to long after the SES light comes on code is P1717. After the car cools down it drives fine. If i drive on the highway to and from work no problems it is only in stop and go. I change the salmon relay in the engine bay and problem is still there. I need ideas of what it can be so i can fix it.

hi i am new to this site and not to sure how to use it yet but if anyone could help me i would really appriciate it. i have an 05 m3 smg. i bought it used and when i bought it it had an after market sterio system already with the car my mechanic swears that this is why my pump blew could anyone help me?

It wouldn't cause your pump to blow lol. I had an SMG problem and since I had an aftermarket stereo they assumed it was that because when they got the fault codes, there were communication errors. How do you know your pump is done? What symptoms do you have?
Btw for me it had nothing to do with my stereo. It was because my steering angle position sensor was throwing codes since my alignment was really off.

well the shifting from 4 to 0 certainly sounds like the pump is starting to go.

An aftermarket stereo system wont cause any direct issues with the SMG, but you have to keep in mind that the aftermarket systems draw a lot of juice and if the battery and altenator can't keep up with it - that will cause SMG issues. For one the pump will prime slower and because it doesn't build pressure quick enough, the computer will say the pump has failed, even though it's fine this can also cause the salmon relay to overheat because it's actating the pump longer.

The shifting 4 to 0 has almost nothing to do with the pump and points almost exclusively to the temp sensor issue.

Odds are Louduss7 has a low battery and possibly a fried salmon relay and the OP has the temp sensor issue.
