Differential seals and gaskets?

just curious. How hard is it to replace the Shaft Seals and Differentials at home instead of paying 700 dollars for the shop to do it?

Pulling the diff isn't too difficult. You need female torx to unbolt the axles. I resealed my cover with RTV, which is super easy once the diff is out. Not sure about the shaft seals.

I would pull the diff myself either way... That should save you more than 3/4s the labor charge.

then I shall search the forum to see if there is a step by step or walkthrough on that. It would just be nice to have a reference.

and yes, thank you for saying that right. I didn't realize I had written it wrong.. I mean to say shaft seals and differentials

Shaft seals are simple. Literally pull the old ones out and place the new ones in. This was on my e36 M3 though, I'm sure they are very similar on the e46.

I don't think you said it "wrong" in the first place. There is a gasket for the diff cover, which has been replaced by a liquid gasket (RTV works fine) and there is a seal on each of the shafts (1 for each axle and 1 for the drift shaft input).
