GSherbs 10-16-2012 12:39 PM

i believe it is transmission related... probably time to pull the codes.

I have the following in my manual

..... Automatic transmission. The transmission has responded to a malfunction by reverting to operation in its emergency default program. Please consult the
nearest BMW center. For additional information: refer to page 59. I have attached pages 59 - 61 fyi. See page 61 in particular. I would consult a good indie
transmission shop before going to BMW. Take it easy.

thanks. anyone had this problem and $$$ estimates? damn I can study for my exam

Alex323Ci 10-16-2012 12:56 PM

It usually is something smaller. If it was on the bad side I think you would have noticed it being an obvious failure in the SMG. here is a good thread, ignore the first post.

ok yeah I didnt notice any gear slipping or other symptoms which was why it caught me by surprise that it came on. hopefully it's just a sensor or something because I just got back to college and already thinking about going home this weekend to resolve this issue asap.

jerseyzillest 10-16-2012 01:10 PM

This issue can cost anywhere from 1000-3000 depends if you DIY and buy new or used parts. It could be SMG pump or the actual transmission.

E46Cherry 10-16-2012 01:13 PM

wow. the coilovers will have to wait...

E46Cherry 10-16-2012 01:29 PM

can't study so drove it a few blocks and light didn't come on....

scca_ziptie 10-16-2012 01:57 PM

Scan the car and see what (if any) codes it has thrown/stored. Try replacing the SMG relay (salmon color in fuse box on drivers side by firewall in the engine bay). It's cheap and something that should be replaced periodically on SMG cars.

Focus on exam and bring it to a dealer.
Don't worry. Daddy will pay for everything.

E46Cherry 10-16-2012 02:18 PM

22, senior at Purdue. Paying for everything myself, titled to myself, and everything from gas, maintenance, mods, insurance etc is paid by me in full. don't put me with those other high school kids that e46 fanatics like to hate on so much. no offense to those guys

MercForHire 10-16-2012 02:21 PM

Chalk it up as a learning experience. Stick to 6 speed manual next time.

scca_ziptie 10-16-2012 03:03 PM

SMG cars are just fine, they are just like manual transmission cars - as long as the proper maintenance is carried out, the car will perform and last just as long. The problem is, most people go by the BMW factory guideline(s) : waaaaaaaaaaay too many miles between oil changes and never change trans/diff fluids. Try the salmon relay first Cherry, you will need a torx driver (t25 I think).

Wolrab 10-16-2012 03:19 PM

I think my SMG is wonderful. Had to change the pump once, but otherwise no problems. It has 172k now.
