how do i know if my 325xi has sport package?

I just noticed my new 2002 325xi has a broken rear spring. I'd like to get a stock replacement, but I'm not sure if I have the regular or sport package. How do you know?

Nothing in the owners manual / paperwork tells me from what I noticed.

I have the higher option power seats and 17" "spoke" type alloy wheels if that helps

Snapasaurus 10-23-2012 08:30 PM

If I'm not mistaken, if you have a 3 spoke steering wheel, then you have the sports package. If you have a 4 spoke, then you don't.

bikesandcars 10-23-2012 08:32 PM

Oh, well all signs point to sport package then. Thanks!

I saw conflicting information about there being a sport package suspension, one post said there was no sport suspension in xi's. ebay and another place said there was a sport spring set on xi's.

This probably sounds dumb to you guru's... I just don't want to order the wrong part

Thanks for any help

Do youself a favor and order the Eiback springs... And get some Koni shocks while you are at it.

I was doing my brake pads, rotors and brake lines and noticed the same thing... Broken rear (passenger side) spring.

Just gotta rebuild them all the way around.

As luck would have it my struts are shot, so in my garage I have new strut mounts plus new bilsteen's ready to put on... Unfortunately no springs though.

I don't want to lower the car or change it's comfort at all (high mileage dd), so unless someone makes a more comfortable stock height aftermarket spring I think I'm leaning towards stock. Thanks for the advice though.

Suspension on all Xi models is exactly the same with or without the sport package.

Thanks Sam, Any recommendations for the "Heavy Duty" versus "Regular" ?

Pelican for example sells both, and they say both fit all models (325i, xi, etc)

http://www.pelicanparts.com/bmw/cata...pg6.htm#item30

I'll do some forum searching too

bikesandcars 10-24-2012 07:13 AM

Ordered 2 new Suplex "heavy duty" stock type rear springs 06164-M636. I'll let you know how they work out.

I'd actually like an aftermarket "rally" kit for my tractor as ground clearance is a bonus and the BMW handles great as it is, but I couldn't find one. I didn't want a 1" drop and couldn't find a 1/2" drop or less from a reputable mnfr.

One is for use with lowering springs, the other is for stock ride height. I don't remember which is which but I'm sure you can figure it out with a little searching. Also, it's not "Regular". They are called "Sport".

Sorry if I was confusing (bilstien with springs)

I ordered regular Bilstien's for struts a couple weeks back (in anticipation)

I just placed an order for 2 stock rear springs made by Suplex, there are 2 options for spring (regular and heavy duty), I purchased heavy duty

Ok, just got a call from Pelican, evidently the springs advertised as fitting several models including 325xi / 330xi aren't really a fit for the xi's, rep told me they are "too short"

So I guess the XI has a taller than non-xi spring package? Makes sense looking at it.

Anyone have suggestions for stock (or near stock) springs? Factory springs are $175 each... not going there.

I looked online and saw the eibach kit for the xi is different than for the non-xi. maybe due to the ride height or front springs.. that seems to be the recommended setup.

Also saw Hotchkis springs that supposedly had less of a drop for sale through summit racing, but no reviews and not on the mnfr website so I'm unsure on them

Heavy Duty Bilstiens are the stock length where as the Sport Bilstiens are for lowering springs.

Get the Eibachs.

What did you end up doing for springs?

SamDoe1 01-22-2013 02:29 PM

Wish I would have caught this earlier but Xi springs are actually SHORTER than RWD springs. The increased ride height comes from other sources.

Kubica 01-22-2013 04:08 PM

Sam, I'm pretty sure rear xi springs are taller than RWD springs.

From what I have gathered they are the same height in the rear. The ride hight difference is from an extra 10mm thickness in the rubber perch. (the 10mm at the spring becomes 17mm at the wheel due to the length of the control arm)

I have a 2002 325xi with the sport package and it has
-3 spoke steering wheel
-10 way adjustable bucket seats
-pretty sure it also came with style 73 wheels
And the seats are still heated

I thought the Xi models actually had lower suspension then the RWD ones?

The XI's version of the sport package doesn't get a special suspension. They are all 17mm higher than the standard "i". The quick tell is the steering wheel and the sliding thigh pad on the sport seat.

I was trying to say that the springs are the same height (length) and that the ride height difference (in the rear) is due to the perch being shimmed.

The suspension has a shorter stroke to prevent bottoming out on rough roads and to limit travel on the front CV joints.
