different ECU types?

Hey guys, how difficult would it be to swap out the m52 engine from a 2002 325ci and put in a m54b30? i heard the ecu is slightly different? i know the m54 used two different software systems, ms43 and ms45, but how do i know which is in the 325ci? and if it is different than the 330 m54b30 engine, how do i change the software? are there extra o2 sensors or what?

'02 should be an M54, not M52TU.

What are you hoping to accomplish, exactly? If swapping engines, I would swap the DME as well.

Well, i saw this on my local CL: http://atlanta.craigslist.org/nat/cto/3355806995.html
it has 195k miles so i was wondering if i could swap out the engine with one from a salvage 330. Also, how would the transmission connect? basically i want to add a m54b30 engine and a manual transmission.

I believe the M52 series engines in the E46 used the MS42 ECU.
The M54B30 switched to the MS45 ECU around 03/2003 production. Before that it used the MS43 ECU.
There are differences in the O2 sensors, intake manifold is plugged at the air temp sensor for MS45 and MAF and other parts (SAP) between the MS43 and MS45 ECUs.

The MS45 ECU M54s will have a different Secondary air pump system that you can see in the engine compartment.
It includes a second Mass Air Flow sensor.

The trans swap threads here should answer any ECU/Trans electronic issues with the swap: I searched here using advanced search on Titles only for Auto Manual.

Pretty sure a swap from an M52 2.5L to M54 3L you have to swap out every single part attached to the engine. They exhaust/intake is bigger on the 3L and the DME is newer. Also there is the drive by wire thing. I think you can just adapt that, though.
