car will not start

Okey so my 04 325i will not start. its an auto. i put in keys and when i push for ignition it doesnt do anything, i dont hear the no cranking or any other noise from engine. i figured it was the starter so changed it. but still nothing

any ideas welcome. i also checked the fuel pump and it seems good to me.

Are you getting any dashboard lights... If you're not getting anything at all does that include not hearing the fuel pump cycle...

vlady1011 11-15-2012 06:14 PM

i am getting dashboard lights like regular they all light up and when i go to ignite the car only two are left on when im waiting for motor to run but nothing happens. i took back seat off and i hear the pump making the noise so its pumping.

i changed the fuel pump about a year ago.

Could be the your Ignition Lock Cylinder or whatever it's called has completely failed.

Edit: You posted right as I did. Maybe it hasn't completley failed yet, but is on its way out, which is why everything pre-ignition is working, exept you can't acually start the car.

vlady1011 11-15-2012 06:15 PM

i have also double checked battery and tried turning the car on with jumpers but same thing happend.

battery is only about 2 years old

vlady1011 11-15-2012 06:29 PM

anyway to test the ignition lock cylinder without replacing?

Zchild 11-15-2012 06:33 PM

+1 on your ignition switch; however usually when it's your ignition switch you won't get all of your dashboard lights...

i just remembered one other thing that is related that my car used to do:

car would not start the same way maybe 2 or 3 other times probably 4 months ago each time about couple weeks of time diffrence. it would not start same way, but after 3-6 times of trying to put car on it would finally start.

shovelit 11-15-2012 07:29 PM

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I wouldn't suspect the ignition switch if the fuel pump is running.
Maybe a starter issue?

Shadow330xi 11-15-2012 07:33 PM

It could be a starter, but he said he changed it and it didn't have any impact on the problem. It does seem weird if it was a ignition switch because the dash and the fuel pump run, but those turn on at different stages in the switch, not on the last part which triggers the starter.

Sounds like something to do with communication from the transponder in the key to the ignition. Fuel pump and all else would run but when you try to start then you get nothing.

did your car go for a swim ?

You're describing an ignition switch issue, plain and simple... The ignition switch isn't expensive and if you're handy a relatively easy DIY. Just my two and a half cents worth... I had the same issue in my bimmer and my fuel pump wasn't the culprit. Just my two and a half cents worth.

shovelit 11-15-2012 08:59 PM

OK. I'm in. Sounds like ignition switch. If you DIY this does the switch need to be programmed by a dealer? Just curious.

vlady1011 11-20-2012 01:45 PM

okey just tried changing the ignition switch. still no results.

used oem from dealer switch

any more suggestions?

I'm with Encryption76 in post #11
Sounds like a key transponder issue. Try another one of your keys. You can also test this theory by reading the EWS status with a GT1 or similar computer setup. Another thing you can try is jumper out the EWS starter disable and see if it starts cranking.

vlady1011 11-28-2012 10:41 PM

i wish i had another key to test. i just got the electrical diagram for the ignition to ews to starter. I was told that somewhere in there is my problem.

I can get the car to crank when i jump the main cable with ignition, it cranks but engine will not start.
scottjoh how would i go about reading the status with GT1 computer setup.

screamer-beemer531 11-29-2012 08:42 AM

Well I had an EWS issue which caused the same problems you're experiencing. It could be that.

328iE46BMW 12-03-2012 01:36 AM

im wondering what could cause the transponder or ews to fail?
