No Start / Very Bad Starting e46 330d touring
Your guidance would be very much appreciated

Hi all,

I am new to here, and I am at a loss to figure out what is wrong with my 2002 330d Touring Auto, 96k

I drove 100 miles no problem, drove another 30 mile the following morning, put some diesel in on way back, stopped for an hour at a friends place and the car would not start, for the first time ever.... finally after trying a number of times it fired but only whilst holding the throttle to the floor.

It sounded rough - running on 4-5 cylinders, it seemed to clear when driving home, stopped and started it again immediately and was not as smooth as it should.

After leaving for 3 days, went to start the car this evening, and on idle on running on 2/4 poss 4 cylinders, bottom end rattled when revving slightly, this almost seemed to clear up to 5 cylinders when revved to 2000rpm. But sounded very bottom endy...this has not happened before.

Turned off the engine and restarted and it idled without any throttle at around 750 (still cold) rev it it wasn't as smooth and still endy but not so much...

The only aspect I can add to this description is that I was in the southwest of the UK last week where there was a lot of water around due to heavy rain, BUT the car started and drove faultlessly for 10 days until I got home. Prior to this never had a problem.

One thought I had - is there a way to see any fault codes on the dash ??? if could you relay the proceedure......

Can anyone give me some guidance please ? I am technical and capable as was a Panel beater in a past life.

Many thanks for your help
