So what do you think is the best E36 engine for a track car? Weekend car? Daily driver?

S52 out of a 1996-1998 if I'm not mistaken.

Do the 323s and 328s get similar highway mileage? Or is the 323 significantly better at sipping fuel miserly?The engine was in great shape, only a small problem occured in one of the cylinders which was burning oil after starting.

Track car: S50B30US; plentiful, affordable, robust, sufficient power; easy to get more power.
Weekend car: S50B32; uncommon, powerful, elaborate throttle bodies and pretty aluminum engine covers.
Daily Driver: M52B28; torquey and cheap.
