Rear Ended :(

6 Attachment(s)
I was on my way to the airport last week for Thanksgiving and this Dodge Ram decided to rear end me :( Got hit pretty bad but my car ended up handling the shock really well.

I was still left with 2k worth of damages though, the guy who hit me tried to pay me off (offered to give me $1000 in $100 bills if I kept quiet about it, ha! the nerve). Anyway worst part about all this is that I was on my way out of the country on vacation. When I came back 2 weeks later, I took it to "Aquilina Paint and Body Shop" (recommended by Silvio's Autohause) and the gentleman there told me to get two different estimates. I then took it to Knapp Chevrolet and Momentum BMW...

Estimates:
Knapp chevrolet - $1888
Momentum BMW - $4117

Currently, the other guy's Insurance sent out an adjustor whose estimate came in at $1947.

Hopefully this will all work out and my baby will be fixed :) I was wondering if anyone knows of any good body shops in Houston? I live in the Heights. Thanks for your support.

Well, whatever you do, DO NOT take your car to those jack a55es at Autobahn BMW in Fort Worth. This is the crooked outfit that crashed a customers E60 M5. The tech, Aaron Skates, who crashed the car denied wrong doing, even though he was behind the wheel. Check it out here: http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e60...onths-186.html. After 16 months and being sued by the M5 Owner, Autobahn finally capitulated in court.

If you do take it to any BMW dealer make sure a fellah named Aaron Skates is not working at that dealership for the obvious reason above.

WOW!! That is insane! I can't believe they tried to do something as ridiculous as this...I'm scared now...

Post larger photos of the damage. If it's just your rear bumper, it can be taken care of for much less than those quotes. If there is structural damage/bent sheet metal involved it will cost more. I would ask your local BMW CCA chapter where their favorite body shop is.

And yeah, I read probably 80+ pages of that M5board thread back when it was happening. Truly awful stuff.

I've uploaded a new picture, hopefully this shows the damage a bit better...There is bent sheet metal and stuff as well, which is why I think those quotes are rather high.

Thanks for your input.

You got lucky. Dodge rams are a lot bigger than we are. He must not have been going that fast. Thats some bad luck. And it probably ruined your vacation too. Having to worry about your car the whole time.

Why would OP care? The perp's insurance is paying for it. Take it to wherever you want to take it to.

thesfactor 11-30-2012 11:17 PM

True, but the insurance company might only cover $1947. If I take it wherever I'd like, then I might have to end up paying out of pocket for the rest...if it ends up being more than that amount, correct?

Generally, the insurance will cover all costs of the repair within reason using LKQ parts. However, I would ask your insurance company how it all works, as not all insurance company procedures are the same. Also there may be different state regulations to deal with too. If you take a check from the dude's insurance directly, then take your car to a shop and they find more damage, it could be difficult or time consuming to get more money from the insurance company. Personally, I would just take the car to the shop of my choice, tell them this guys insurance is going to take care of it all, call me when it's finished.

I can share my story of getting rear-ended up here in Washington State. One would hope it's the same process as in Texas.

When I was rear-ended in my wife's 4Runner, all I had to do was give the guy's information to my insurance company. They took the info and took care of everything. I never had to deal with the other guy's insurance at all. It was wonderful. They took care of filing the claim with the other insurance. All I had to do was tell the tow truck driver where to take the truck, then told my insurance agent which body shop it was headed to. They even called the body shop to let them know it was on it's way. They sent their adjuster to the body shop and handled all the money and details. I was called a week later to come pick up the truck all shiny new again. USAA and AAA FTW!

I might also add, WOW that is a ton of damage! Your trunk lid is sitting a good 1/4" lower than it should be. Hard to tell with pics, but it looks like your trunk valance would have to be cut out and replaced. I'm betting the trunk lid and lock assembly has been compromised too. I wouldn't be surprised if the total cost came on the high side of $4,000.

scarede46er 12-01-2012 12:23 AM

OP: No. The insurance company is liable to pay for all damages till the perpetrators insurance limit (usually state limits are 25K/50K). Even beyond that, you have the option of attaching the liable party;s property. So dont take whatever they give you. Take it to a good bodyshop and ask them for an estimate to forward to the company.

If I were you. I would have asked for $1200 cash and kept quiet about it.
Touch up the bumper with a $10 touch up paint, and bend back the metal under trunk with a small rubber hammer.

use that cash to buy candy and resell to the local kindergarten kids for massive profit

blksab65 12-01-2012 04:57 AM

WOW thats not even too bad, with that 1k he offered you you might have got lucky and could have fixed it for that price and make some money if your a diy'r. paint and a bumper would have been under 1k but who knows what more damage hides, always play it safe and report it, unless your driving a e30, that would would be totaled!
