s62, lt1, ls1, & jz swaps.
I'd like to start a general thread regarding these swaps..

-Who's done 'em?
-Different mods?
-Cost, reliability, maintenance, etc.?
-Horsepower, weight, 0-60, general power?
-Sound & tone during revs & idle?

Personally I'd love to talk about these swaps in the e46. Or just in general.

S62 (M5 V8)
1JZ & 2JZ

I've heard the LS and LT are the best "bang for the buck," but personally, I think the JZ is one of the most amazing motors ever, and I especially enjoy it's orgasmic sound
The SR20DET is a great overall motor as well, capable of roughly 400-500 on stock internals.
Unfortunately I don't know much about the s62 though.

I don't know a whole lot about each motor, which is why I'm researching and I'd like to see a specific thread on these swaps too, for whoever is interested.

Anyways, thoughts? Opinions? Comments? Questions?

PS. Here's a video I shot today of my buddy doing a quick pull with his recently dropped 2j (used to have 1j)..

I'm posting because I am curious about this stuff too.

My vote goes to ls v8, I think they are beautiful engine's. I plan to swap a ls2 or ls3 into my E46 a few years down the road.

In the wagon? That'd be sick! Haha.

That is the plan. It will be a total sleeper when it's done!

More details on my GMBMW will be forthcoming in the next week...

^Good to hear!
I'm excited about my future swap just thinking about it.

I think we need a "how to" guide on an LS1 swap in an e36 chassic, retaining all interior oem electronics :D

I've done the numbers, and here in Aus it'll cost me about 10k installed including car and engine (doing a lot of the labour in my garage though).

E46inthe206 12-03-2012 01:19 PM

Why e36?? lol.

v8 5 12-03-2012 08:53 PM

2jz bro it's a 2jz

jerseyzillest 12-03-2012 09:05 PM

Your way better off with an LS motor, non turbo, no tuning issues and your pushing 400-500 hp.

Heaps easier to keep an operational oem cluster/dash, iirc.

I would love a 2jz e46 m3.... A couple shops ignored me.. Including Luts Performance.. Max psi said they already had to many projects..So i ended up turboing my s54

JZPowered is a nice place as well.

This is relevant to my interests :) Not for myself but rather just enjoy seeing others work in these areas.

I searched and read through a few threads around different forums on an sr20det swap. Some people mentioned how you'd be messing with weight distribution and such. Which is understandable. What would you need to do to drop an sr20 in there?
I was thinking about selling my e46 for enough money to build a 400+hp 240. I was going to buy a clip with an SR motor and drop it into a shell.
But I"m just curious as to how it would work in our e46's.

Sell the e46 and have put down 10-15k on a built SR + paint, suspension, wheels OR swap the e46 with the amount of pathetic savings I currently have and still be slower than a built SR.

I made a list of the SR20 parts I'd need and my buddy would hook me up with the turbo/intake manifold for 1500 total.

GT2871r .68 Turbo - 1000
Greddy Intake manifold - 600

CX Racing FMIC - 300

ARP Head Studs -160

SPEC Stage 2 Clutch Kit - 350

HKS Step 2 Exhaust Camshafts 264 - 300

HKS Valve Springs - 300

HKS 740cc Injectors - 750

HKS Super Sequential BOV - 300

Apexi Power FC - 1300

Apexi Metal Head Gasket - 150

Megan Downpipe - 130

eBay Test Pipe - 50

DOC Top Mount T3 Manifold - 700

38mm External Wastegate - 250

T28 Turbo Gaskets- 40

Walbro 255LPH Fuel Pump - 100

Isis Fuel Pressure Regulator - 20

Blitz Boost Controller - 270

Circuit Sports Return Lines - 135

Megan Short Shifter - 120

PSI in Portland would be doing the swap/tuning.

My cousin did an ls2 in his e36 m3. Even if you are doing the work yourself, which will be a pretty large undertaking, parts alone will cost 5-7k.

That's a nice swap, but unfortunately we have e46's and doesn't that mean it'd be more complex involving more parts? Or no?
Regardless, I'd rather have a built import haha.

Twin_Turbo_S54 12-28-2012 06:36 AM

go for a S54.

Its a very good engine. I was making North of 1000 whp 3 years ago and was not able to put it to the road.

Best 60-130 mph of mine has been 4,23 s. Made with S54. Its a great engine. I Loveeeeeeeeeee it

No need to elsewhere.
