If turbos give better fuel economy why don't all econobox have them

I see that in the last few years Bmw is turbocharging a lot of their engines and one reason is fuel economy.

Why doesn't econobox come with 40hp engine and just turbo charge those. ?

Likely due to the increase in cost, hence making them less "ECONO"box.

Because It wouldnt save you fuel on a 40 hp Engine, A turbo atomizes the air to help it burn better. Larger engines tend to be less efficent thus why they make a difference is my understanding

In before everyone is an engineer all of a sudden.

False.

Turbos compress air so that more air can be forced into the combustion chamber. More air = more fuel can be burnt = more power.

Small displacement turbo engines are just coming into the market. Expect to see many more as time goes on.

The biggest reason they haven't been widely available is due to both cost and the small engine itself. Smaller displacement engines have less exhaust flow and that doesn't bode well for turbos as they use the exhaust stream (turbine side) to power the compressor side.

My favorite cars with turbos are the ones with lackbof turbos.

Cost of parts, reliability, power delivery, assembly costs.

And I'd much rather say the reason for turbos being common is for manufacturers to meet emissions regulations.

They do, just not in the US. To get optimal results (70+mpg) you want a turbo diesel. MPG, reliability, and power.

lol wat.

A turbo COMPRESSES the air, effectively increasing the displacement of an engine. The difference is a turbo is power on demand, so a small engine is still a small engine until more power is needed, whereas a larger displacement engine is going to continue to use more air and fuel that may be necessary to maintain its own momentum.

This.

Economy cars are meant to be economical to buy and run. If you want the best fuel economy, spend more money for a hybrid or electric car.

Turbos also don't give you better fuel economy. They just push more air into the engine.

That is possibly one of the dumbest things I've read on E46Fanatics in a while.

Yes, but the small engine allows you to get better fuel economy when the turbo is not feeding boost and provides power, even with a small engine, when feeding boost. Best of both worlds.
