just bought a 325xi and uh oh....

hey everyone.

ive been a lurker on here for a while. a few years ago my mom had a 2002 325i and i thought she was going to give it to me for my first car so i registered on here and started doing research. turned out she didnt give me the car and traded it in on a 135i convertible. i ended up buying an 04 525i. i totalled that car a while ago and i havent had a car for over a year.

i just bought a 2003 325xi in orient blue on tan leather. the car has just over 151,000 miles on it and i negotiated to $7k out the door. the car is immaculate inside and out and when i first saw it it was really nice. everything is mint, including the engine bay and everything. definitely the cleanest 3 i've looked at in the past few weeks. today i went back and asked if i could take it for another spin and he said sure. after a few blocks i could smell burning oil and when we got back i popped the hood and it was smoking. the dealership owner who was with me said it was the valve cover gasket was leaking which was a common problem on these cars. he offered to have it fixed before i picked the car up so I'm not too worried, but i just wanted to know what you guys think.

when i got my 5 series i had to have the valve cover gasket replaced as well at 83,000 miles because it too was dripping oil onto the headers.

all responses will be greatly appreciated.

thanks

This car needs a PPI bad. It could only be a VCG or it could have been that the whole thing imploded.

Don't get emotional on a car, make the right choice. Also, $7k is too high you should try to get him down to $5k-6k especially with the crappy test drive. I'm sure the PPI will reveal and laundry list of issues.

Edit to add: Just read that you bought this thing...I wish you the best of luck...

ppi? vcg? im buying from a dealer it came in on a trade so i'm sure most maintenance has been completed. the engine sounded flawless so i don't think there were any mechanical issues.

edit: just realized vcg = valve cover gasket still dont know what ppi means though

Ppi

P.P.I. = Pre-Purchase Inspection, which I was guilty of not having done. :lmao:

PPI is a pre purchase inspection. Too late for that now but still a good idea. If they find a lot wrong you can go back and see what they will take care of. Especially if its safety related. They will probably have to take care of those items.I am not sure about NY law. In Ma they would have to fix anything safety related if it has to do with state inspection.

its going for a NYS inspection monday. i won't take delivery until later next week. if it doesn't pass inspection they will have to fix everything until it passes.

i will be the third owner of the car so i'm fairly certain that all maintenance has been kept up on. especially after driving it and seeing how immaculately clean it was, i think the previous 2 owners were a bit neurotic.

Make sure you also have them replace the 15 rubber grommets when doing the valve cover gasket.

Famous last words. Unless you have documentation that it was done, assume it hasn't. I can clean up a shitty car to look great but it'll still be a pos.

Btw, never trust a dealer to do anything.

If anything replace the valve cover itself or have them replace it if it keeps on smoking or dripping some oil.

Make sure you check your shocks and struts make sure they are ok i had to replace my rear shocks after buying my xi 133xxxx 2002. And also check your fan clutch make sure is spining very fast while engine is on . Suggest a differential flush too since third party dealers only make sure it passes the inspection. Hope helps
