325i engine with 330i engine?

as some of you know i have a cracked head and i don't know how the previous owner drove it so its probably not a good idea to just get a new head cause i don't know the shape of the aluminum block.
Will the 3.0 out of a 330i bolt straight into my 2001 325i? what years are compatible with this swap? any advice?
Thanks

I heard is same wires sensor swap by itself is same but you will need to change some modules and reprograming then!

I'm pretty sure your 2001 E46 325i came with a M52TUB25 motor and the 330i came with a M54B30 motor. Therefore its not a straight swap... I had the opposite issue in which OI spun a bearing in the lower block of my M52TUB25 motor so I used my M52TB25 head unit and paired it with a M54B30 block. In other words I used my original 323i head unit and a 330i block, crankshaft and injectors to put my car back on the road. Main issues are the 330i motor is drive-by-wire and I believe the 325i motor has a cable throttle body. Secondly the MAF is larger as are the intake hoses and the DME software is different. Those are just a few of the issues you will have to overcome in order to do a straight swap.

325i was equipped with an M54B25. Its a direct swap all that is needed is some coding of the MS43 DME.

More or less a direct swap. Best to grab the intake from the 330. Plugging all that in and installing a 330 tune on your DME should do the trick

yup direct swap.

1999-2000 323/328 M52TU line of engines
2001+ 325/330 M54 line of engines (some M56)

2001 325 is a 2.5L M54

metlic53 12-27-2012 10:16 AM

well i'm going to start looking for an engine then. Whats the latest year i could get and it be a direct swap? is there a certain year that was "better" than the other? i'm hoping to find one with 90k miles or lower, i found one already with 90k and they wanted 2 grand for it (not too bad)

stookin 12-27-2012 10:17 AM

01-05

If I were you, i'd go for 03+. they seem to be mostly free of oil consumption problems for some reason

2001 325 is a 2.5L M54

Thanks Alex, appreciate the right information, you da man; the fact that it is still a 2.5L confused me I assumed incorrectly thatr the M54 only came as a 3.0L motor.

Would it be reasonable to assume the M54 out of a 5 series would be suitable also. I assume some of the periperal plastic will not fit. Is it possible to do "some coding" or a "330 tune" with INPA etc. maybe by changing the VO? Or does this mean replacing the DME?

Oil pans are different between chassis, but the block and head are the same.

right, thats common knowledge. theres a bunch of other stuff that op will have to switch over as well depending on what year engine he gets. he'll handle it

I wouldnt say its common for everyone to know that. OP should be made aware of the differences regardless if he knows or not.

Best of luck with the swap OP.

I agree, it's not common knowledge to everyone. Especially someone asking if its the same engine.
Good info

I know. that's why i told the OP what cars he could source the engine from :hi:

it'll be painfully obvious when the pan is sticking out or doesn't fit.. give the OP more credit.;)
