The 2012 Apocalypse did't miss me... HELP!!!!
Sorry for the long thread but I feel like I should tell the whole story to get a good overview of what I'm dealing with.
So I bought my first E46 about a month ago now it's a 2001 325ci automatic transmission with 109k miles. I got a great price for it about half of blue book value, so I figured it was gonna take some tlc to get it back into shape. The day after I bought it I noticed a slight oil leakage. I ordered a valve cover gasket replacement to try and fix oil leak. In the process of this when I removed the valve cover I found that there was a whole lot of sludge within. I found some diy's that said to remove as much as possible then go with the seafoam solvent to get rid of it through oil changes. After replacing the head cover gasket I was on my way to work on the freeway and the low oil light came on. A few seconds later the car has a very rough time accelerating and drops down to about 45 mph. I get off on the next exit and then when I come to the stop light the car dies. It will not start back up. I tow it back to my place and open up the valve cover and see that 2 of the brackets holding down the Exhaust Camshaft (part #11311435416) had cracked in two and one of them was rubbing up against the cam for too long and completely split it in two! Now I have seen some diys on replacing this and it seems very difficult. I have found a used camshaft on ebay for around $200 but am debating doing this myself. I do not really have the thousands of dollars I'm sure it would take to have the dealership do it so what are my best options? car seems like a lemon. try to investigate lemon laws in your state.
Exhaust cam sensors takes 5 minutes to replace, and you shouldn't be paying $200 for a used one.
