Reliability of older Mercedes?

Particularly the diesels, are they good for 300k+ miles? How about the gas motors? And by older I mean mid to late 80's.

my dad had an 81 sd, 91 sd and 95 sd. i currently have a 94 sd and theyre great. maintenance and DIY is pretty straight forward as well

the 91 saw ~ 265,000 miles
95 is at ~3xx,xxx
my 94 is at 134,000 and is flawless. looks like a brand new car
BMW has ~45,000 and sits in the garage :tsk:

my family owned a 1990 560 SEL. It was a tank, and what I mean by tank is that it was indestructible. It had it's issues but I still loved that car. It had fan issues and once ran only on 7 cylinders.

I used to have a 1989 560SL. It was a beautifully built car and ran like a champ. I never had a moment's trouble with it, but I took very good care of it.

I've found a 1985 380SE with a single owner and 90k miles for next to nothing, if it hasn't already been sold. All the others I've found are north of 200k miles.

I smoke cigars, not pipes.

:yikes: take it!

I don't smoke anything but if I did it would be a long pipe like Bilbo smokes in The Hobbit.

I'm trying. It's gorgeous and only 10 minutes away, just waiting to hear back from the seller. They posted the ad 2 weeks ago though so I'm not getting my hopes up. I'd rather have a diesel but considering this one only has 90k and the price is a steal I wouldn't mind gas.

It's gorgeous

However with a car that old wont you guys have trouble finding parts?

vorceb23 12-29-2012 10:19 PM

My Uncle has a white 87 560sl convertible, he's the original owner and he loves it, swears he'll drive it until the day he dies. Never had any major issues, just regular maintenance (which is a little expensive.) I've driven it a couple of times and while I can say it's definitely pretty quick, theres nothing really that special about it- just doesn't do anything for me.... :dunno:

PS that car looks clean I'd go for it

bmwdude330 12-29-2012 10:35 PM

That car is a tank and will last another 200K with just a little bit of maintenance. Everything is pretty easy to work on also. Good luck!

They've taken on John McClain, Jason Bourne, Bryan Mills, James Bond, and Jason Statham.

I dig the pink seats. I can totally see you rockin' that look.

I have toyed with the idea of purchasing a 300D or 240D for years. I love the way the look and how practical they are. Not to mention their reliability is pretty much unmatched.

diM3tri 12-29-2012 11:41 PM

My dads girlfriend has owned a 1977 240D for about 6 years. The odometer stopped working at 220k when the previous owner had the car. God knows how many miles are actually on the damn thing.. The engine is solid. The car always runs. Although I could probably jump rope down the road with 2 broken feet faster then the car could drive... In the winter you will need a block heater to start the car, in the summer you will be sweating balls cuz there is no way A/Cs gonna work. But the engines last forever. The tranny never had any problems and it was regretfully an auto. The only thing that destroys these cars is the rust. The car was perfect for the first few years but last year the rust started spreading and eating the car alive.. It went from a luxurious cream color to a sh*t stained orange. If you're gonna buy an old Benz make sure to get the 300D or 300TD. The 240 is just too slow to drive. It would strain for effort when you floor it just to drive at normal speeds. Also try to find one with minimal to no rust. If you do find one with rust take care of it RIGHT AWAY. My dads girl made that mistake and now it's just a big orangeish/sh*t color pile of metal..

The car always got a lot of attention. It's gorgeous and a fun hobby car. Rust was the only major problem we had.

Good luck!

Dad had a '82 300SD, beautiful car, go for it, you'll enjoy it...
