If Obama Took 'Executive Action' On Guns, What Might He Do?
 

So that some of our members don't go crazy and shoot their own nuts off:

After Vice President Biden said Wednesday that the Obama administration might take some executive actions on the issues of guns and gun-related violence, questions naturally arose:
What kinds of things was he talking about? What might the administration do that doesn't require Congressional action?
Our colleague Ari Shapiro is looking to answer those questions on All Things Considered later today (click here to find an NPR station that broadcasts or streams the show). Meanwhile, here's some reporting from elsewhere:

• — Obama might "strengthen the database that the FBI uses to perform background checks on gun buyers. Many federal agencies that don't currently contribute to the database, such as the Social Security Administration, have access to mental competence information about prospective buyers, or details about failed drug tests and other issues that might prevent a sale to the wrong person. ... The president could also demand that the states share more information from their crime and mental-health databases." (The New York Times)
• — "It is unclear what specific executive orders Obama is contemplating, though one Democratic aide with insight into the talks said Obama could sidestep Congress and bolster federally funded mental-health programs." (The Hill)
• — "The coalition of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, led by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, has called for Obama to consider several measures that they said could be implemented without congressional approval: Step up prosecution by the Justice Department of felons and others prohibited from buying weapons when they attempt to buy them. ... Require federal agencies to report records to the National Instant Criminal Background Check Systems. ... Appoint an ATF director. The federal agency charged with enforcing gun laws has gone without a confirmed director for six years." (USA Today)

The Times adds, by the way, that "most changes to the current system, which allows easy access to weapons with hugely destructive power, has to come through legislation."
After the Dec. 14 mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., Biden was charged with reporting back this month with "concrete proposals" on reducing gun violence. Among the groups he's due to meet with today is the National Rifle Association.

Oh yeahhhh because one of the moderators is a tool who believes it's totally fine to have 8,000 anti-republicans threads but can't stand the sight of one that clearly presents that the administration has no problem overstepping their powers.

What smells is the bullsh*t being spewed by the White House... Biden wants Obama just to overstep congress if they, elected officials, can't come to a consensus. When did the president earn the ability to just push through any executive order he feels appropriate and at what point did it become ok even if it's stripping citizens of their bill of rights?

I think the final outcome will really only piss off everyone. Not restrictive enough and too restrictive to some.

Realistically there will be banning of large magazines (Clips). Stronger background checks, including gun shows. Tighter regulation on "Assault" type weapons..And beyond that.. not much more.

None of those measures listed would have prevented any of the latest mass shootings.

If Obama was on record stating that he was banning all personal firearms, he wouldn't last 24 hours.

I would think the most likely executive action (if any is taken) would be to instruct the DOJ and ATF to more strongly pursue "AW" sales and possession of items which the USSC ruled as AW under the Clinton AW ban. I don't seem to recall the USSC specifically overturning that ruling, and if they haven't, he would have a "constitutional leg to stand on".

Who cares, just to see the paranoid gun fetishists get all red-faced and foaming at the mouth at the very thought of Obama mentioning the word "gun" is certainly entertainment enough. I imagine more than a few fleeing to their armed doomsday bunkers like roaches when the light's flicked on just waiting for the black UN/NWO helicopters to steal their precious bodily fluids (Dr. Strangeglove allusion for those not of a certain age).

In reality, it will likely be little more than some mundane and, for better or worse, generally ineffectual Executive Orders that beyond rattling the readily-rattled paranoid gun fetishists will amount to little.

What amazes me is that a person on this forum can make a legitimate thread expressing the concern over our VP stating that our President will simply supersede congress if needed to place an executive order taking away second amendment rights of US citizens.. and that it can turn into nothing but a flame fest.

I suppose the libs are perfectly fine with their chancellor in chief doing whatever he pleases. Just bend over and take it with a grin on your face :facepalm:
